MINTANA (best price 10/1) hadn’t shown a huge amount until finding a nice bit of form at Chepstow last time out and with the handicapper somehow seeing fit to drop James Evans’ filly despite a seemingly improved effort, she makes quite a bit of appeal off her bargain basement mark.

Unable to make much of an impact on two starts over seven furlongs at Kempton, the daughter of Havana Grey was dropped back to the minimum trip at the Welsh venue 26 days ago and if it wasn’t for a slipping saddle which plagued her virtually from the word go, she would have gone close to breaking her duck. Almost un-steerable late on, she did well to finish so close up given the circumstances and with the front two having both gone to boost the form subsequently, her effort deserved to be marked up. Clearly better than a 49-rated filly on that evidence and hailing from a yard whose last two runners have both won, she has every chance of outrunning her morning odds.

VOLTIAC (best price 11/2) was more than a shade unlucky to bump into the rejuvenated Ciotog at Wolverhampton last time out but it was a run to suggest that Tony Carroll’s gelding is close to peak form again and today’s assignment provides him with a decent opportunity to confirm that impression.

Since returning after a summer break, the son of Power has put in three decent shifts and the clock is also pointing very favourable in the direction of his latest effort. In what turned out to be a well-run affair at the Dunstall Park venue, the six-year-old looked poised to take care of business until the powerful late thrust of the eventual winner pulled the rug from under his feet, but with the pair well clear of the rest, it was a performance that was right up there with some of his better achievements. Although he’s yet to win at today’s track, it’s worth pointing out the chestnut did run really well in defeat over six furlongs here back in February and considering he tried to make his challenge up the un-favoured far side of the track, that scenario shouldn’t pan out again on his return visit from stall nine.
