12:05 Sandown

It is Tolworth Hurdle day at Sandown and £250,000 for today’s Tote Placepot is guaranteed in the pool. Not only that but you can also grab yourself a FREE £1 bet on the app and website to use on today’s Placepot as well.

Last but certainly not least, there is a huge Trifecta rollover Veterans’ Chase Series Final which takes place at 15.00pm at Sandown, where the final rollover is £17,788 and the estimated net pool is £80,000.

Here are my recommended selections for today’s Placepot plus the selections I will be recommending for the Trifecta as well. Have a great day and best of luck with your punting!

Leg 1 Selections: Bo Zenith

BO ZENITH looked an exciting prospect when winning on his sole sole start for David Cottin back in April at Auteuil and makes his stable debut for the Gary Moore team, who does brilliantly with his juveniles each season.

His trainer has also won the last two renewals of this race and that France form has worked out strongly, with plenty of winners emerging out of that race since, so he’s expected to prove hard to beat and get favourite backers off to a flyer in the opener.

Philip Hobbs’ Mombasa is the obvious threat, who’s better than he showed last time, and is the back-up choice in case the favourite doesn’t win as this race is likely to see four runners go to post with Ben Pauling expected to pull his horse out which means WIN only.

Leg 2 Selections: Love Envoi

In leg two, the Harry Fry-trained LOVE ENVOI should have too many gears for the consistent Martello Sky. She is a brilliant mare, who has only tasted defeat once in her career, which came when second in a high-class Grade 1 in Ireland. She won two Grade Two events last season - at the Cheltenham Festival and at this course and is undoubtedly a warm favourite here. I would much want to rely on her than anything else.

She made a winning return here five weeks ago when defying a big weight on handicap debut over a trip short of her best and will relish conditions here. She is likely to prove even fitter with that latest winning return under her belt and will be even better back over this longer trip, so she is strongly fancied to come out on top on these terms. Leg 3 Selections: Scipion, Certainly Red

SCIPION looks a solid option in leg three. He has yet to finish outside the top three in all starts under rules so far and this winning hurdler, who was also placed in a Grade Two last season, shaped with promise on his chase debut. He will have learnt a lot from that defeat and the drop back in trip could be the right move. Tom Lacey’s charge has a good chance from a two pound lower mark than last time.

CERTAINLY RED is genuinely reliable and when he puts it altogether in the jumping department, he is a hard horse to beat. He returned a wide-margin winner when last spotted and whilst he has been raised five pounds for that success, he continues to progress. This course will put more emphasis on his jumping but if he can adapt to the railway fences, he is sure to be thereabouts when the race starts to get competitive.

Leg 4 Selections: Frero Banbou, Xcitations

FRERO BANBOU wasn’t quite at his best when fourth at Ascot last time but he still ran well and he will relish the softer ground here. He was third in the Grand Annual at the last Cheltenham Festival off a pound higher mark and that was a much stronger race than this one. He has performed well in both his previous visits here, so this could be the time he gets his head in front for the first time since early last year.

XCITATIONS is an interesting outsider and might have been overlooked by most here. It’s a surprise he is so high in the betting given the fact he has won three of his last four starts and did well to win last time despite a mistake at the last fence. He has only been raised three pounds for that success, so if he takes this course, he has a better chance than his odds suggest to at least make the frame.

Leg 5 Selections: Authorised Speed, L’astoboy

Last season’s Champion Bumper fifth AUTHORISED SPEED, who fared the best of the British that day, has since made a promising start to his hurdles career, winning both starts in good style, including at this course. He has been aimed at this race for a while by Gary Moore, will handle the ground and might just have too many gears for Tahmuras at this course over this distance. I think he is a really solid favourite and could book his ticket for the Supreme with a winning performance here.

L’ASTROBOY cannot be taken lightly at a big price. He showed a good burst of speed to beat Tahmuras in a bumper at Ffos Las 11 months ago and his performance can be upgraded, as the winner got first run on him and has won again since. He won with a lot to spare on his hurdles debut as well, so while this is a tough task on just his second start over hurdles, Evan Williams’ charge is dangerous to rule out being respected as the only unbeaten runner in the field.

Leg 6 Selections: Sir Ivan, Run To Milan

SIR IVAN has finished third in this race for the last two years. Firstly in 2021, where he took the bronze medal off a mark of 135, beaten under three lengths before filling the same position twelve months ago off a mark of 140. He might have gone close without making a bad mistake at the fourth last fence last year too.

Harry Fry’s charge is down to a career-low mark of 129 over fences and will be at peak fitness now following two really good efforts already this season. With a lot going for him, including track, trip and conditions, this 13-year-old looks set to run another big race here. I think he has an excellent chance of winning this.

RUN TO MILAN actually beat Sir Ivan at Exeter when last successful and that was off a mark of 132 on soft ground. He is down to a mark of 128 and improved on his reappearance to finish third of 12 at Ffos Las just over two weeks ago. He had previously finished a half-a-length second to Win My Wings and was conceding the winner a pound in weight too.

That form is strong given the winner went onto win a Scottish Grand National off a mark of 140, so he is well-treated off a mark of 128 here plus his prominent style of racing will suit him around this course. He brings some of the strongest form to the table and ticks a lot of boxes, so he is definitely worthy of inclusion at the very least, especially with form figures of 1212P2431321 going right-handed as well.
