Leg 1 Selections: Social City, Bascinet, Winklevi

A tricky opener for leg 1 but SOCIAL CITY wasn’t disgraced on his last visit here in a better race and has a chance off a reduced mark. He is a former course-and-distance winner and has valuable experience on the all-weather, so he makes the shortlist.

BASCINET won over track and trip off only a three-pounds lower mark on his penultimate start and his overall figures at this course reads two second and a win from three starts. He could be on the premises, while WINKLEVI was second here in January off a pound higher mark and is another course-and-distance winner to consider.

Leg 2 Selections: Tennessee Dream, Fayasal, Timedtoperfection

TENNESSEE DREAM completed a three-timer before only managing third here last time but she will appreciate the drop in grade and she’s already won twice at the course, so she could continue her fine form figures and make the frame at large odds.

FAYASAL opened his account in great style on his first visit here last time and is probably the one to beat on that form with more to come. Of the others, Richard Fahey’s only runner on the card, TIMEDTOPERFECTION, could improve on recent form and trouble the judge on handicap debut.

Leg 3 Selections: Calin’s Lad, Motawaafeq

It’s a surprise to notice that CALIN’S LAD has yet to win at this course given his record here reads an impressive 32332222 and six of those efforts have either been off this mark or higher. Oisin Murphy has been booked to ride, who could get further improvement from him, and his mount is seemingly banker material to make the frame.

MOTAWAAFEQ won over course-and-distance last April off a three-pounds higher mark in a class five event and drops in class in a winnable race. This will be the first time in this grade for well over two years and is drawn effectively in stall five. He isn’t far off a career-low mark despite still running well, so there’s optimism about his chances.

Leg 4 Selections: Cicero’s Gift, Docklands

It is only a matter of time before Bussento gets off the mark after three promising efforts in defeat but he again might have to settle for minor honours here behind CICERO’S GIFT, who overcame a bad start to make a winning debut at Newbury on his only start last year. That form seems strong and Charlie Hills is in-form. He is taken to remain unbeaten in leg 4.

The other one who could get involved is the Harry Eustace-trained DOCKLANDS, who shaped with a lot of promise when a close-up second on debut at Haydock on his sole start last year. He flew home from miles off the pace to only be beaten a neck and, with that experience under his belt, he could find the improvement to go one better.

Leg 5 Selections: Flame Of Kodiac

It’s possible handicap debutant FLAME OF KODIAC could make a mockery of this mark of 65 in leg 5, who has stepped up with each start and ran very well when third at Chelmsford last time.

He is ideally drawn in stall two and his trainer John Gosden has been amongst the winners this month. With the step up to a mile sure to play to his strengths based on breeding, he must surely be thereabouts.

Leg 6 Selections: Athmad, Young Fire

ATHMAD could be hard to topple in leg 6. The seven-year-old has won at this course six times, has won three of his five starts over this distance and has an impressive 24% strike-rate on the all-weather. His record here is superb and he’s defied higher marks in the past as well, so he’s a major player in a bid for another course-and-distance success.

YOUNG FIRE is another course-and-distance, who resumed winning ways here last time and has won/placed off much higher marks previously in stronger events, including off marks in the high 90’s. David O’Meara’s horses are in superb form of late, which adds confidence, so this eight-year-old has to be of some interest and is included in the ticket.
