Leg 1 Selections: Mahanakhon, Old Smoke

MAHANAKHON raced three times last year, placing in each of those starts despite returning a beaten favourite twice. A break should have done him good plus he has more to come this season, so it is difficult to see him out of the frame if ready to go on his reappearance with his form working out well.

OLD SMOKE posted two good efforts in defeat at Newcastle last year and is dropped in class on his return on turf debut. Richard Fahey’s charge is another with a leading chance on his turf debut from a nice draw in stall 2. Oisin Orr is 4-20 at this course as well (20%).

Leg 2 Selections: Highland Queen, Slainte Mhath, Bonito Cavalo

Mark Winn is 3-11 here (27%) and he rides HIGHLAND QUEEN, who has predominantly been campaigned on the all-weather since competing on the turf at Carlisle mid-last year, which came off a higher mark. She was second on her handicap debut off 58 last May and is 10 pounds lower here with her rider taking off a further five-pounds. She is one to consider.

SLAINTE MATHE has plenty of early dash and is only a pound higher than when scoring at Hamilton last year. She was third off a pound higher mark over course-and-distance in October and has leading credentials. BONITO CAVALO shaped well when a keeping-on fourth at Musselburgh last-time-out and could go well on his reappearance from the same mark.

Leg 3 Selections: Hard Solution, Zegos Surprise

The last time HARD SOLUTION ran here was when successful over track and trip from a three-pounds higher mark two years ago and his latest couple of efforts indicate a return to winning form could be just around the corner with his stable in good form as well. He makes the list.

Iain Jardine’s ZEGOS SURPRISE has been successful on soft ground before and has made the frame twice this year, beaten under a length in each. She returns to the turf off a pound higher mark than last time but she should be able to ruffle a few feathers in a race that is weak for the grade.

Leg 4 Selections: Oh So Chic, Calevade

OH SO CHIC makes her stable debut for Sara Ender after a below-par effort at Southwell but she had been progressive on the turf beforehand, where she finished three times in succession over this distance and while she remains eight pounds above her last winning mark, she could still get involved.

CALEVADE won over this trip on his last start on the Flat from this mark and even though he could only finish a distant fifth over hurdles last time, the return to this sphere is favourable. He should have more to come and could make the frame in leg 4 with fitness assured.

Leg 5 Selections: Another Batt, Challet

ANOTHER BATT last won off a four pounds higher mark on the turf at Doncaster in a stronger race than this and looked in need of his return on the all-weather last time. The eight-year-old is well-treated and is drawn well, so a big performance could be on the cards, as he has already established himself to be better than this grade.

CHALLET ran a decent race when sixth of 14 last time, where he was nearest the finish and finds himself three pounds below his last successful mark. He goes well fresh and is also drawn well here. The conditions will be fine and I can see him running well on his return in leg 5.

Leg 6 Selections: Marshal Dan, Abolish

MARSHAL DAN won a valuable pot at Newbury in October and then outrun his huge odds when fourth of 10 in a Listed event at Doncaster. He ran well on his reappearance last season at Musselburgh in the Silver Arrow and the fact that connections have opted for this race instead this time suggests he is expected to make an impact.

ABOLISH hasn’t managed to succeed for a while but he wasn’t discredited at Newcastle last time and is eight pounds lower than then scoring at Ripon last year in September. I think he will be suited to the drop in trip to five furlongs and should be thereabouts.
