Following a 2/1 winner yesterday, Steve Ryder is back with three tips for today's action.
14:15 Exeter
This looks a competitive 0-120 handicap hurdle but preference goes to the Oliver Sherwood trained Maclaine (best priced at 6/1) who has had a wind operation since his last run. The six-year-old ran with credit on his first three career starts before justifying favouritism when winning a Fontwell novice hurdle in November by 2 ¼ lengths.
Maclaine disappointed on his handicap debut last time at Doncaster but he has had a wind operation since and has also been taken out twice last month when the ground was too soft. He should prove better than a mark of 113 and I expect him to run well with four places on offer.
14:30 Pontefract
Snuggle sets the standard in this novice race with a rating of 77 but I expect the Richard Fahey trained Desert Games (best priced at 2/1) to have progressed past him over the winter. The son of Kodiac outran odds of 25/1 to finish 3rd on his debut at Wolverhampton when only beaten 1 ¾ lengths before finishing 5th on his final start last season at Pontefract when trapped wide.
Desert Games has been gelded over the winter and I am expecting him to make a winning reappearance in this race.
16:00 Pontefract
Both Project Black and Phoenix Fire are respected on their handicap debuts but preference goes to Amy Santiago (best priced at 4/1) who is fitted with first time cheekpieces in this race. The Richard Fahey trained three-year-old finished a close 2nd on her debut at Thirsk before finishing 6th at Newcastle on her next start. She outran odds of 14/1 to get off the mark at Southwell on her next start before finishing a close 6th (beaten only 2 ¼ lengths) on her handicap debut last time off a mark of 77.
The handicapper has dropped Amy Santiago 1lb for that effort and connections now fit her with first time cheekpieces. She should be suited by the return to turf as well as a stronger pace expected in this race and hopefully she can get back to winning ways.
