BOLD ACT (best price 5/2) did extremely well to win from the position he was in at Chelmsford last time out and with that first run of the campaign likely to have done Charlie Appleby’s colt the world of good on so many levels, he rates a strong choice to topple what looks a smart field of three-year-olds.

Out at the back at halfway in a race lacking any great pace - which was surprising given the strength of the field - the son of New Approach looked to have plenty on his plate as the race developed further.

However, with a powerful late surge up the far side rail, he found a smart turn of foot to run down many highly-regarded types and it was a performance that strongly suggested he’s going to be in for a productive season.

Not only does he have the benefit of fitness on his side following that initial outing, he also has an advantage of having raced over today’s track on his final start last term and with the combination of those two factors seen as possible deal clinchers, the classy-looking three-year-old can earn his first black-type stripes.

A cracking novices’ hurdle with so many different strands of form to decipher and of those who arrive here a little less exposed than others, RED DIRT ROAD (best price 7/1) makes the most appeal to elevate his game to another level.

An instant hit for new connections when making a winning UK debut at Southwell back in November, Jonjo O’Neill’s inmate only found one too good in a competitive novices’ event under a penalty at Leicester a month later, and considering the ground that day was far from ideal, his performance deserved extra praise.

Back on better ground at Exeter last time, the son of Fame And Glory was well-supported to return to winning ways and, having set a solid tempo throughout, he duly justified his position in the market with a dominant display from the front.

Clocking a smart speed figure at the West Country venue, it was good to see the well-beaten runner-up, Isaam, go on to boost the form subsequently and even though today’s race represents a totally different examination in all aspects, the improving six-year-old is fancied to prove equal to the task.

BROADWAY BOY (best price 5/1) maybe the most inexperienced member of today’s field, but on the other hand, he rates the one with the biggest amount of ‘upside’ and with his current mark of 126 eminently exploitable, Nigel Twiston-Davies’ young blood can end his season on a high.

The five-year-old first sprung to prominence when getting off the mark at the third time of asking over three miles at Aintree back in November and he went on to add to his winning tally with a smooth success over the same trip at Market Rasen last time out.

Noted travelling comfortably throughout, the son of Malinas stayed on strongest of all after the last and with a decent field of handicappers strung out like washing in behind, his performance at the Lincolnshire venue had to go down as a career high.

A likable type who will no doubt jump a fence sooner rather than later, the five-year-old has plenty of attributes to ensure he’s fully effective in races of today’s nature before he arrives at that point.
