MASHHOOR (best price 7/2) didn’t run too badly considering he would have found a mile way short of his optimum at The Curragh last time and with that effort likely to have at least serve the purpose of getting Johnny Murtagh’s gelding fit, he’s fancied to improve on his fourth place in this race last season.
Having shown top-quality form over 1m2f last rem, it was rather surprising connections decided to start this campaign for the son of Kingman in the Irish Cambridgeshire and, unsurprisingly, he proved ineffective. That said, he did finish off his race with a good degree of purpose from the rear of the field to offer plenty of hope for the remainder of the season and with trip, ground and draw all seen as massive positives for the five-year-old, it would be somewhat of a surprise if he doesn’t play a major role in the final outcome.

FAST RESPONSE (best price 15/4) proved no match for a rampant Vadream in the Cammidge Trophy at Doncaster on her opening bow of the campaign but, as the time figure of the race revealed she was heavily involved in a massively above-average renewal of that early-season sprint, Karl Burke’s filly can go one place better now back amongst her own sex.
A rapid improver towards the backend of last term, soft ground enabled her to raise her game to listed level and on the evidence of her first effort for 147 days, signs are extremely positive for the future. Noted going as well as anything approaching halfway on Town Moor, she couldn’t quite respond in the manner of the eventual winner, but she did keep on well enough to finish an honourable second and with the rest strung out like washing, her performance in defeat comes out close to a career high.
Form-wise, it was good to see the well-beaten Commanche Falls come out and pay a huge complement to the race 20 days ago with an excellent display at Newmarket yesterday and with plenty of rain forecast in the build up to this evening’s contest, the daughter of Fast Company makes loads of appeal at the morning prices.
