The way he finished off his race, however, suggested he’s a horse in prime form at present and with a record of 1123 at today’s track when there has been some give in the ground, conditions should be ideal for the eight-year-old to add to those impressive stats.

TARBAT NESS (best price 10/3) is still awaiting his first success after nine starts, but there was much more encouragement gleaned from his latest exploits at Redcar in the first-time cheekpieces and providing he runs somewhere near the same level 14 days on, John Berry’s gelding has a fine opportunity to shed that unwanted tag.

Only mildly promising in eight previous outings, connections were fully entitled to search for new measures to glean improvement and on the evidence of his effort at the Yorkshire venue, it seems like they’ve stumbled across the perfect aid.

Although he ultimately ended up getting beaten two weeks ago, it was noticeable that he and the winner pulled 15 lengths clear of their toiling rivals and with the backend sectionals working out along similar lines as the sprinters on the same card, it’s easy to see why the pair were so dominate late on.

Having proven that he stays two miles on soft ground to a reasonable standard that day, hopefully today’s test should prove well within his range and off what appears to be a very workable mark, the four-year-old can finally post an overdue success.
