Towards the rear as the field turned for home at the Co Meath track, Thomas Gibney’s inmate began to make in roads into the main players inside the final two furlongs and by the time he had hit the line, he was bearing down on the first three home.

Considering that was his first outing for 231 days, his performance deserves extra praise and with the son of Beat Hollow really blossoming over hurdles around the same time last year, it looks as though the same pattern could be developing again.

Held up way off the pace as the front-running Fringill Dike did his own thing at the head of affairs, the nine-year-old still had it all to do coming out of the back straight and although he ultimately could never land a meaningful blow at the winner in the final half a mile, he kept on well in the latter stages to suggest he is back in full working order.

Although yet to win at tonight’s Borders venue, he has run a series of fine races in defeat and with conditions here tonight drying out all the time, he has the perfect platform for him to regain the winning thread.
