Leg 1 Selections: Raasel, Bedford Flyer, Existent, Acklam Express

A competitive renewal of the Coral Handicap to start the action at Glorious Goodwood. The six-year-old RAASEL hasn’t been at his very best this season but he won Listed/Group events last year and his record here reads 112, all of which have been over course-and-distance.

The latest second of those three starts here was at this meeting last year in the Group 2 King George Qatar Stakes, where he was a neck-second to subsequent Group 1 winner Khaadem. Despite remaining winless this term, he has regularly posted good efforts in defeat, including in first-time cheekpieces at Ascot when fourth last time. Surely he will go close.

BEDFORD FLYER was below form at Newcastle last time but has placed several times off higher marks and gets the assistance of Rossa Ryan in the saddle. He could bounce back with this course more reliant on speed, which is his asset, while EXISTENT and ACKLAM EXPRESS are more than capable of running well at a higher level than this when at their best, so both are included.

Leg 2 Selections: Array, Darroch

The clear form-pick in this Maiden Stakes, which is leg two, is ARRAY. Held in high regard by connections, he produced a promising debut second at Newbury, where he had subsequent easy Ascot winner Indian Run back in third. With more to offer, he can go one better, while DARROCH should take a step forward from his debut third at Salisbury, form that is working out well, and could run well at double-figure odds.

Leg 3 Selections: Ancient Rome, Millebosc, Moktasaab

ANCIENT ROME was very useful when trained in France, placing in three Group 1 events, twice behind Angel Bleu and also Modern Games. He hasn’t been anywhere near that level this year but the return to this longer trip on stable/handicap debut will suit and Jamie Spencer takes the ride. He has the class to run a big race and is the most interesting runner in the field.

MILLEBOSC was a very good third in the Group 1 Qatar Prix Du Jockey Club as a three-year-old and has caught the eye in both starts for this stable, including after eight months off when a running-on seventh of 18 to Pride of America in John Smith's Cup at York last time. He is considered off the exact same mark, while MOKTASAAB was third in this last year off a five-pounds higher mark and Hayley Turner in the saddle catches the eye.

Leg 4 Selections: Golden Mind

I am keen on the chances of GOLDEN MIND in this Group 2 contest, who shaped with promise when third on debut before opening his account at Leicester on his second start. He stepped up markedly, form-wise, to finish a staying-on third of 16 in the Chesham at Royal Ascot, doing all of his best work in the closing stages.

Frankie Dettori takes the ride this time around and he is open to plenty more improvement. He makes plenty of appeal in a race that is likely to be run to suit and is a half-brother to the top-class Perfect Power who won various Group 1 events during his career. Lots to like about his chances.

Leg 5 Selections: Kinross

In the Lennox Stakes, KINROSS should take plenty of beating with lots in his favour. The drying ground won’t be a concern even though he more effective with juice in the ground. He is the class act in the field, who won this two years ago before going close when second twelve months ago. He was beaten just over a length when third to Shaquille in the July Cup and is clear of these on ratings. He could be another winner for Frankie Dettori on the card.

Leg 6 Selections: Courage Mon Ami, Ocean Wind

The big race of the day, the Goodwood Cup, and  COURAGE MON AMI is fancied to remain unbeaten by confirming his superiority over Coltrane after claiming the Ascot Gold Cup on just his fourth career start. That was a breathtaking performance for a horse with little experience and he could be real-deal in years to come in this division. I really like his claims.

At an even bigger price, don’t rule out a bold showing from the consistent OCEAN WIND who has form figures of 311122233 on the Flat and was only beaten a length when second to Stradivarius in the Sagaro Stakes a couple of years ago. He shaped very well on his return from more than two years off when third in a Listed event last month and will be much fitter in this contest. He could easily outrun his odds.

How does a Placepot work?

The more people who play the Placepot at a given meeting, the larger the pool will be. If less people find the winning combination across the six races, the bigger the winning dividend will be.

When placing your Tote Placepot bet, you can choose whether to make one or more selections in each race, which are referred to as lines.

Adding multiple lines in a race increases your chances of picking a horse that places. However, your total stake is determined ‘per line’, so the more lines you place the higher the stake will be.

To work out how much you have won, multiply your stake per line by the amount of winning lines you have. Your winnings will then be either that percentage of the published £1-stake winnings or a multiple of the published dividend.
