Leg 1 Selections: Poutchek

Despite fluffing the start and running green throughout, Roger Varian’s POUTCHEK ran a good race on debut at Newmarket to finish a running-on third and clearly has a lot of ability on that evidence. Any normal improvement should see her heavily competitive in this race.

Leg 2 Selections: Le Mans 

LE MANS did ever-so-well to snatch victory on debut at Newmarket as she was held-up so far back in the field but absolutely charged through the field to win a shade comfortably, beating a subsequent winner. Ryan Moore will take the ride this time and she could take some beating with improvement to come.

Leg 3 Selections: Soar Above, Lord Uhtred, Ernie’s Valentine

SOAR ABOVE has a great record here with three course-and-distance wins and although he doesn’t have a good draw, he has placed in his last three visits here, two of which have been in higher-grade events. He might just have the class to defy top-weight. LORD UHTRED has course-and-distance winning form and hasn’t been disgraced in two better races since. He could run well in this grade. ERNIE’S VALENTINE has a good record on the all-weather and cannot be dismissed either.

Leg 4 Selections: Botas, Almarin

An extremely competitive race for the fourth leg but BOTAS caught the eye when third on stable debut over track and trip and while he failed to land a blow at Sandown, his second at Ascot reads well. Open to further progress, he could emerge as a leading contender. ALMARIN would have in-the-frame claims at least with a repeat of his York second. He is drawn well in stall 2 and cannot be ruled out on his all-weather debut.

Leg 5 Selections: Pistoletto, Open Champion

PISTOLETTO cashed-in on a reduced mark when successful over course-and-distance five weeks ago and a three pound rise shouldn’t be enough to prevent him from going close to doubling up as he has lots of good-quality historical from off higher marks in stronger events. Nice chance from a low-draw in stall 3, while OPEN CHAMPION will relish the ease in grade and has fallen to an attractive mark.

Leg 6 Selections: Hill Station, Roman Tempest 

HILL STATION needs to leave his two recent hurdle outings behind him but that’s a possibility and he was second off a pound higher mark at Lingfield. The four-year-old could go well at a price, while ROMAN TEMPEST went close when third at Lingfield last-time-out and is on the same mark for this race, so he’s not ruled out.
