Mahon’s Way looked good on the eye when scoring at the first time of asking over hurdles but as the time figure was poor, suggesting he might not have achieved that much, the better option against him is SOLITARY MAN (best price 9-2), who has shown a fair level of form over today’s course.

A three-time winner over hurdles, Enda Bolger’s inmate’s level of improvement was highlighted by the latest of those victories here last time out and, considering it was the second time he has gone well at today’s Mallow venue, it’s clear a flat, right-handed circuit over three miles suits him well.

The way he stayed on in the closing stages to readily get the better of What Path hinted there could be more to come from this future chasing type and although he has yet to smash the ball out of the park on the figures yet, neither have any of his main rivals.

RICKY BOBBY (best price 9-2) has been slowly working his way back to something close to his best and with his latest effort at Thurles testimony to that statement, Timothy Doyle’s gelding can add to his previous C&D victory.

Promising in his formative years, the eight-year-old totally lost his way after a series of setbacks but since switching to his new handler, the landscape doesn’t look so grim. Back over hurdles at the Co Tipperary venue following a couple of encouraging efforts on the Flat, the son of Elusive Pimpernel was ridden way off the speed in the early stages of a very competitive handicap, but he made rapid headway in the final half mile and in the end, he only found the course specialist, Herculaneum, too good close home.

The change of gear he exhibited in passing virtually the entire field in such a short space of time 17 days ago suggests his old ability remains and with his only career victory having come at today’s track, hopefully a return visit will reignite the flame.
