The Mick Appleby trained Penzance (best priced at 6/4) heads the market following his easy win over this course and distance a week ago and he should hold strong claims under a 6lb penalty. The three-year-old joined the stable from the Simon & Ed Crisford yard and ran well to finish 4th beaten only 2 ½ lengths on his first run for 151 days since being gelded.

Penzance won easily by four lengths over this course and distance off a mark of 73 and the handicapper has raised him 8lbs for that victory. He instead runs here under a 6lb penalty meaning he is 2lbs “well in” at the weights and he should prove hard to beat from Stall 1.

This looks a competitive 0-70 handicap but preference goes to Mr Trick (best priced at 7/2) who has been running consistently since going over this trip of 1m2f. The Ian Williams trained five-year-old finished 2nd by a nose at Lingfield on his penultimate start off a mark of 54 before finishing 2nd by a short head at Wolverhampton last time off the same mark.

The handicapper has raised Mr Trick 2lbs for that effort up to a mark of 56 but he instead runs here again off a mark of 54 meaning he is 2lbs “well in” at the weights. He is better drawn than the favourite Headingly in Stall 3 so he should run well once again.

Tradesman (best priced at 5/1) gave Hayley Turner her 1,000th career winner a month ago and he should hold strong claims at this track once again. The David Simcock trained four-year-old has won his previous four starts at Chelmsford off marks of 46, 54, 58 and 65 with two coming over this trip of 1m6f and two over 2 miles.

Tradesman won comfortably by 1 ¾ lengths last time off a mark of 65 and the handicapper has raised him 6lbs for that victory. He goes up in grade from a Class 5 0-70 handicap to a Class 4 0-80 handicap but he should run well once again.
