Mysterious Times 10/11 (1pt)

Charlie Appleby and William Buick combined to win this race last season with the subsequent Group 3 winner Beckord’s Folly and they look to hold strong claims with MYSTERIOUS TIMES (best priced at 10/11).

The well-bred Night Of Thunder colt cost 425,000gns as a yearling and made an encouraging debut at Sandown when finishing 3rd. He was drawn poorly in Stall 10 that day and showed his inexperience by ducking left at the start and racing keenly in the early stages. He made really stylish headway to get into contention before weakening late on having jumped the path.

This step up in trip to 6f will suit based on both breeding and on his debut effort and I expect Mysterious Times to get off the mark at the second attempt.

Havana Sprite 5/1 (0.5pt ew)

This looks a competitive renewal of the listed Empress Fillies’ Stakes with preference going to HAVANA SPRITE (best priced at 5/1) who can benefit from the experience of her three career starts. The James Tate trained filly was 4th on her debut on 1000 Guineas Day at Newmarket when beaten only two lengths with the form working out well with the third Crownbreaker outrunning odds of 100/1 to finish 5th in the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot.

Havana Sprite was 2nd beaten at odds on next time at Yarmouth but the winner did finish midfield in the Queen Mary and she then justified her short odds to win at Bath last time making all over 5f. On all three of those runs she shaped like this step up in trip to 6f would suit and she has a lofty rating of 85 coming into the race (Argentine Tango had a rating of 82 when winning last year).
