UK Horse Racing Tips: Galway

LIZZIE TWIGG created a good impression in her first two runs over flights with a wide-margin victory in a maiden hurdle at Punchestown and with a comfortable success in a novice hurdle at Roscommon. She is more than adept on better ground and Jack Kennedy has chosen her among the pair of Gordon Elliott representatives. Gomez Addams has the benefit of winning a bumper at this track and made a good start to his jumping career at Listowel in May. Fastnet Crystal really took to hurdling at Downpatrick and should have a say, while Elliott's Porcupine Bank and Magico, who races for Willie Mullins, make this a competitive opening contest.

There are plenty of interesting recruits to chasing in this field and FRANKIE JOHN is certainly one of them. He has posted some notable results over flights including a fourth in a Grade 1 on his penultimate start in the Sefton at Aintree. Bowensonfire reached a peak mark of 153 over timber, so warrants automatic respect on his first crack at steeplechasing for Gordon Elliott, who won this race last year. Willie Mullins fires three darts and his My Great Mate enjoys his trips to Ballybrit, while Love Me Tender is sure to be well schooled.

KILBRIN ROCCO ran a stormer to finish second in a higher grade at Wexford, when sandwiched by horses rated 117 and 123, and a reproduction of that effort would have him heavily involved. Good ground and this sort of trip worked the oracle for Giant Haystacks at Wexford, and he is nicely weighted in receipt of weight from the leading contenders. Finnians Row has been in terrific form at Downpatrick and is a good-ground horse that could be dangerous off the front. Fort Randall has been having a decent time of it for Noel Kelly and got off the mark over fences at Cartmel, while Ned In The Park came from a long way back for second in a beginners' chase at Wexford.

This race used to be farmed by Dermot Weld and he has a live contender in SILVER KISS. There was a lot to like about her opening third at Fairyhouse behind two horses who could be stakes class, with the runner-up subsequently winning a maiden by nine lengths. Paddy Twomey introduces The Good Wife, who has some big-race entries and will know her job. Aidan O'Brien is double-handed and jockey bookings indicate that Madam Secretary is the pick of them. She has been out twice and got closer to the breakthrough at Newmarket when beaten two lengths into third. O'Brien's newcomer Haven made a whopping 550,000gns at the sales, while Argentarius has shown definite promise when runner-up on debut at Cork.

There could be another big pot in the lightly-raced JAGGED EDGE. The Blue Point gelding won the Irish Cambridgeshire last year for Dermot Weld and delivered on stable debut for Stephen Thorne at Naas in May. That earned him a trip to Royal Ascot and although he didn't trouble the leaders in the Royal Hunt Cup, he wasn't beaten all that far. Pierre Royal was very good in winning at the Curragh and Ado McGuinness knows what is required for premier handicaps at Galway. Hardy Warrior is better than his fourth place in the Gowran Classic after a less than clear route and first-time cheekpieces may aid his cause. Last year's winner Dunum is a standing dish at Galway, but faces a difficult task as he has been off since September.

EDDIE G did well to win by a neck at Naas after a troublesome passage a furlong out. He competes off just 2lb higher, from a lovely low draw, and it looks significant that the champion jockey comes in for the ride for the first time. Inishfallen flew home for second in Limerick, which makes him a big danger from the stall beside Eddie G. The selection's stablemate Goal Exceeded gives Ado McGuinness a strong hand. He was a comfortable winner at Leopardstown, although the handicapper didn't miss that run. Zaraahmando is in a consistent vein of form and could be lively, despite a very tough draw.

The 96-rated SINDAGAN sets a high standard in this maiden. Johnny Murtagh's charge has met some very useful horses in being placed in three of his five races. On his latest outing, he was the only horse able to go after the 102-rated winner in Fairyhouse and there was plenty of merit in his runner-up berth. Joseph O'Brien's Starborn Legend rattled home when just pipped by a head in a maiden over 6f at the Curragh, and the step up in trip looks sure to suit. Almeiyda is another with a close second in the book, from Roscommon, and should be involved in the distribution of prize money.

Java Wood is likely to be popular with Dylan Browne McMonagle booked. After scoring in Limerick, he just failed by a short head and a neck to defy the 7lb penalty in third at Gowran Park a couple of days later. Stall 16 tempers enthusiasm, though. SAN AER comes with risks, but showed more in fifth at Killarney and has two Galway victories on his CV. The handicapper has undoubtedly given him a chance. Bay Of Dreams put it all together in Bellewstown and won twice during her career in Britain, so knows where the winning post is. Ballinrobe winner Lady Arwen and Moyassr are others gunning for a cheque, while the reserves wouldn't be without chances if getting in.
