• Every winner in the last 23 renewals had already won at 2m or further over hurdles

Galway Hurdle 2026 Runners Guide

Ndaawi (Gordon Elliott) – The reigning champion, awarded the race in the stewards' room 12 months ago after finishing second on the run-in. Now 7lb higher on the official mark, though James Smith's claim takes 5lb off that. Won twice since, including a Flat conditionals race at Cork, and clearly relishes this course.

El Cairos (Gordon Elliott) – Fifth in the Supreme at Cheltenham last spring before a below-par run at Punchestown. Jack Kennedy switches across from Ndaawi, a significant booking, and this looks the type of drop into handicap company that Elliott has been planning for since the spring.

Casheldale Lad (Gordon Elliott) – Third in this 12 months ago and boasts genuine Grade 1 form, having chased home Lossiemouth and Brighterdaysahead over Christmas. Josh Williamson's 5lb claim is a big help from an already workable mark.

Laafi (William Durkan) – Disqualified after finishing first past the post at Aintree, then run down close home in the Swinton at Haydock. Effective at this trip on this ground, lightly raced over hurdles and clearly progressive.

Puturhandstogether (Joseph O'Brien) – Won the 2025 Fred Winter and followed up with a gamble landed in the Irish Cesarewitch. Below-par at Royal Ascot last time, but this yard knows how to land the big pots and Harry Cobden takes over.

Murcia (Willie Mullins) – A Grade 1-winning mare dropping back to 2m, ideal conditions on paper. Paul Townend's choice among the Mullins entries, which speaks volumes given the strength in depth at Closutton.

Tounsivator (Willie Mullins) – Unlucky in running when fourth in this race last year, and caught the eye with a strong turn of foot in a Flat contest at the track earlier in the week. Danny Mullins takes the reins in search of an improved placing.

Helvic Dream (Noel Meade) – Demoted from first after interference with Ndaawi 12 months ago, and back 5lb higher. A yard in good touch and a horse clearly primed with this race in mind again.

Ragmans Corner (Gerard Keane) – A course specialist with a big-race pedigree at this venue, including a course win in October 2024. Won at Killarney in May and shaped well when far from disgraced at the Curragh since. Each-way interest with five places on offer.

Putapoundinthejar (A J Martin) – Successful in a big-field handicap at Bellewstown last time and steps up in grade carrying a 5lb rise for that win. A yard with previous course success and no shortage of big-day know-how.

Too Bossy For Us (Willie Mullins) – Wore her heart on her sleeve at the track earlier in the week, doing too much too soon under different tactics. A workable mark of 138 and Supreme form in the book make her one to note.

Starting Fifteen (Eric McNamara) – Two starts in Grade 1 company at the back end of last season, both without disgrace. A big drop in grade today for a yard renowned for peaking a horse for the right target.

Gameball (Henry de Bromhead) – Punchestown maiden winner who was given a sighter by Paul's Dream at Kilbeggan last time. That run may prove no more than ideal prep, and a well-run 2m suits.

Solness (Joseph O'Brien) – Better known as a smart chaser with Grade 1 form, reverting to hurdles off an 11lb lower mark. Carries top weight but the O'Brien string is flying.

Kai Lung (Willie Mullins) – Shaped with promise for third on his latest start and gets in lightly weighted, with scope to progress further as he learns to settle.

Beauvallon (Willie Mullins) – A four-year-old with two wins already banked, including at the Punchestown Festival, though limitations were exposed at Bellewstown last time.

Sageborough (Paul Nolan) – Won at Wexford last time out after a run of near-misses, tongue-tie retained. Lightly raced with just five career starts, but the form is there.

Royal Hollow (A Slattery) – Chased home Murcia at Listowel in May and faces a similar task against the same rival here.

Barbizon (Gordon Elliott) – Created a strong impression on his hurdling debut at Navan but hasn't progressed since in tougher grades. Races out of the handicap.

Thisistheway (Yvonne Latta) – A mare with solid form on her CV who shaped better than the bare result behind Putapoundinthejar last time. Capable of sneaking into the frame.
