He has only had one winner so far but could be set for a big two days
Willie Mullins finally got off the mark at the 2020 Cheltenham Festival when Ferny Hollow beat stablemate Appreciate it in the last race on Day Two.
Mullins was expected to dominate the Festival once again, however, things haven’t gone to plan in the opening two days. On the opening day, he saw the likes of Asterion Forlonge, Cash Back, Benie Des Dieux and Carefully Selected get beaten. Yesterday wasn’t much better for the Irishman, he had thirteen runners on the day which included Allaho and Appreciate It, but he had to wait for the Champion Bumper to record his first victory.
Ferny Hollow obliged for Willie Mullins and Paul Townend, and that win has got punters dreaming of a Willie Mullins comeback. Since Ferny Hollow won the last race on day two of the Festival, 43% of bets in the Cheltenham Festival Top Trainer market have been on Willie Mullins.
The champion trainer could have been backed around the 4/6 mark pre-festival, however he’s since drifted to 5/1 in the market.
Even with Tiger Roll finishing second, Gordon Elliott managed to pick up a couple of winners on the second day of the Festival. Elliott is the favourite in the market at 11/10. He’s got a very strong hand on the third of Cheltenham with Samcro, The Storyteller and Ben Dundee among his runners.
Nicky Henderson landed another couple of winners yesterday, and he currently sits second-favourite in the market at 11/8. Like Gordon Elliott, Nicky has a very good roster of horses in action today. His day three runners include Welsh Saint, Mister Fisher and Floressa.
Oddschecker spokesperson Callum Wilson: “There’s a very good chance Willie Mullins could stage a remarkable comeback, however, his main day looks to be Friday.”
“He’s got a great chance of having the winner in the Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle, and has several good chances in the rest of the races, but tomorrow he could easily pick up 3+ winners. We’d be taking the 5/1 and hoping for at least one win today and nothing for Elliott before Willie Mullins’ Friday.”
