Turners' Novices' Hurdle Tips

I must admit, I wasn’t entirely sold when I’LL SORT THAT won the Grade 1 Ballymore Novices Hurdle at Naas in January but perhaps I was doing him a disservice as he beat several fancied runners from some of Ireland’s biggest powerhouses.

While there’s no doubt that Willie Mullins has a better calibre of opposition lining up in this race, I’ll Sort That has a fantastic attitude and you’d imagine he will knuckle down and battle up the Cheltenham hill – and the longer run-in will help his chances.

It’s a big moment for Declan Queally but he’s more than capable of giving his horse the best possible chance to win the race. While he may not prove good enough, I’d still be hopeful he can finish in the first four.

I’LL SORT THAT (25/1, 0.5pts E/W – 4 Places)

WESTERN FOLD proved that he doesn’t need quick ground when finishing second to the reopposing Kaid D’Authie at the Dublin Racing Festival but there’s no doubt that he acts better than most on nicer ground and he’ll get those conditions here.

Jack Kennedy is on favourite Romeo Coolio – and understandably so given he is a three-time Grade 1 winner over fences – but there is a question mark over whether he will stay the trip. For me, he probably will but I’m not willing to find out at his current price.

It’s a competitive race and you could make a case for plenty of them, but I’m hoping that Gordon Elliott has his horses primed and Western Fold can hopefully run a big race and the uphill finish at Cheltenham will be of no concern.

BetMGM Cup

BetMGM Cup Handicap Hurdle Tips

I’m writing this on Monday evening and THE YELLOW CLAY may have received a huge form boost by the time this publication goes out. By the same token, The New Lion may have blotted his copybook and The Yellow Clay could be a big drifter in the betting.

On paper, the case for him is simple. He was campaigned initially with the Stayers Hurdle in mind but he isn’t an out-and-out staying type and he just isn’t good enough to lay up with Graded horses over that sort of distance.

He arrives here following an underwhelming run at Christmas but Michael Kenneally is booked to ride and he takes a very handy 5lbs off. In theory, he runs off a BHA mark of 150 and that looks lenient based on last year’s Turners Novices Hurdle effort.

THE YELLOW CLAY (8/1, 0.5pts E/W – 5 Places)

Cross Country Chase

Cross Country Chase Tips

A left-field suggestion in the Cross Country Chase but I’m going to give PIED PIPER a go on his debut in this discipline. Sam Ewing takes the ride and I just wonder if a race like this may reignite the old flame as he clearly retains plenty of ability.

It is a specialist race so you never know until you try but he looks well treated on his best form and he may stand a better chance of staying a mammoth trip in a race like this as they often crawl round for 80% of the race before things start to get serious.

He could end up out of the back of the television and I may be made to look silly but it is important to remember that he was a 157-rated hurdler in his prime. Gordon Elliott has a strong hand in the race and Pied Piper can go well for the Cullentra House handler.

Grand Annual Chase

Champion Chase – MAJBOROUGH (NO BET)

I won’t ramble on too much about this Champion Chase as I think it’s a foregone conclusion that MAJBOROUGH will win if he gets around. With no Marine Nationale in the race, he is the class act in the line-up and only Il Etait Temps (172) is rated within 10lbs of him.

His fellow Closutton inmate is 0-3 at Cheltenham and many have suggested that he fails to act at Prestbury Park. If he fires another blank, it looks like Majborough’s race to lose and this will be a watching brief for me with that in mind.

Grand Annual Chase Tips

I’ve been looking forward to seeing RELIEVED OF DUTIES back on good ground and he runs off a BHA mark of 133, which looks strong enough when you look at Addragoole and his form with the likes of Release The Beast and Jacob’s Ladder.

They ran off level weights at Cheltenham in October and the Robcour horse finished 11 lengths clear of Gavin Cromwell’s runner that day. Five months on and there is a 9lbs swing in the weights… in favour of Relieved Of Duties.

Jack Kennedy takes the ride and it is interesting that Gordon Elliott has kept Touch Me Not in at the top of the weights. My selection carries a racing weight of 10-9 and the better the ground, the better his chance of emerging victorious.

RELIEVED OF DUTIES (12/1, E/W – 5 Places)

Champion Bumper

Champion Bumper Tips

THE MOURNE RAMBLER was much the best in what looked like a hot enough bumper at Leopardstown over Christmas and I am very sweet on his chances in Wednesday’s Champion Bumper. Colin Keane takes the ride and I’m fascinated to see how he gets on.

If you look at Premier Division – Noel Meade’s horse beat him by five-and-a-half lengths at Leopardstown while Keep Him Company was just four lengths clear of the same rival but he was receiving 5lbs. With that in mind, I’d expect The Mourne Rambler to have the beating of Gordon Elliott’s horse.

Willie Mullins has an armada of runners in here and Quiryn is the one that I’m keen on but I am confident that The Mourne Rambler can get the job done for connections and I make him my best bet of the day on Wednesday.
