Triumph Hurdle Tips

Despite initially being concerned that PROACTIF may end up running in the Triumph with an insufficient amount of experience under his belt owing to the fact that his Fairyhouse win was too close to the DRF to run in a Grade 1 subsequently, I have very much come round to him following the withdrawal of Narciso Has in the build up to The Festival.

Back in France this lad was a good six length winner of the Prix Finot at Auteuil over 2m2f when having the reopposing Apolon De Charnie behind, but his aforementioned debut for Willie Mullins at Fairyhouse in January was a particularly smart performance considering he was hassled for the lead almost the whole way by Combs.

Despite not getting an easy time of it on the front end, once our selection burned off his inferior challenger he faced a much more realistic battle with Macho Man – but I loved that he was able to fend his stablemate off with relative ease when recording a 2.75 length success. It would have been more optimal was he able to run in a Graded race between then and Cheltenham, but considering Poniros was able to win this race on his hurdles debut last season, there is no better man for the job than Willie.

County Hurdle

County Handicap Hurdle Tips

When the Friday declarations filtered through on Wednesday morning, I only had my eyes on one thing; who would be booked to ride KARBAU in the County Hurdle? In every preview and article I have done about this horse I had the idea in my head that Paul Townend could very feasibly pick him over Murcia, and to my delight that is exactly what has transpired!

This is another horse who I have put up in my Cheltenham Festival Ante-Post column, and I am now more confident than ever that he will run a huge race. At the 2025 Festival Paul Townend only had one Handicap ride during the week when winning this race on stable elect Kargese, so lets all hope that he can repeat the trick this time around. I would advise a 1.5pts Win bet on him at the current prices if you haven’t already backed Ante-Post.

Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle

Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle Tips

For some reason DOCTOR STEINBERG has become many observers idea of a lay of the meeting, but I couldn’t be stronger on his chances here and am buzzing with the 16/1 position we secured in my Cheltenham Festival Ante-Post column. If he consents to settling in the early stages then he will take some stopping, as he has developed into a very smart Novice this season.

With the position in hand it is worth covering a horse off in the betting however, and I am electing to go with THEDEVILUNO, who conversely is fancied by most of those aforementioned observers. His hack up job in the Grade 2 River Don Novices’ Hurdle was extremely impressive, and whilst I do think it would be difficult for him to reverse the Navan form with the Doctor, we do at least know that he stays this trip without a bother.

Cheltenham Gold Cup

Cheltenham Gold Cup Tips

As soon as the sad news came out that Galopin Des Champs was out of the Gold Cup I went straight to the bookmakers in order to back GAELIC WARRIOR – as it all but confirmed that Paul Townend would be taking the ride. Had Galopin ran the talk was that he wouldn’t be able to get off that horse in favour of one of Rich Ricci’s stable stars, but my confidence is now greatly enhanced.

His victory over Fact To File in the John Durkan back in November was some performance from the front, and when contesting the slowly run King George on Boxing Day he was only beaten a short head by The Jukebox Man. That race didn’t really fall right for him all in all, but I would say that you can mark up all of the first four home that day.

We last saw him running in the Irish Gold Cup at the Dublin Racing Festival where he chased home Fact To File into second place, but as has been well documented, he was far too keen under Patrick Mullins in the early stages that day. With Paul back on now I am confident he will be able to settle him here however, and I have no real stamina concerns with him. What’s more is that I like a horse with a bit of pace and class in a Gold Cup ran on decent ground – with the likes of Sizing John and A Plus Tard springing to mind.

Martin Pipe Handicap Hurdle

Martin Pipe Handicap Hurdle Tips

This is a fiendishly difficult Martin Pipe, but one that I thought had very feasible claims at a big price is OPEN SECRET – who is surely one of Gordon Elliott’s bet chances in the race. He has certainly been a bit of a slow burner over obstacles, but following a second place to Gin Tonic he then absolutely bolted up in a 2m3f Maiden Hurdle at Naas in December, where he beat dual subsequent winner Raise You Up by an easy seven lengths.

What I like most about this horse was that they ran him over this course and distance on Trials Day, where he was sent off a 14/1 outsider in the Grade 2 Classic Novices’ Hurdle. The race is now synonymous with the hole in the track incident beforehand, but when they eventually got going he plugged on nicely into fourth place – only beaten 3.25 lengths in total by Kripticjim (135), Taurus Bay (135) and Fortune Timmy (132).

In order to run in the Martin Pipe he of course needed five starts over hurdles however, so connections very much rushed him to qualify by running in the Grade 3 Michael Purcell Memorial Novice Hurdle on the 19th February, and he probably ran the perfect race in second behind Bon Viveur, when certainly not given a hard time of things by Jordan Gainford. Timeless Treaty (135) was back in third that day too, and he has since ran a mighty race behind Blizzard Of Oz at Thurles.

With the talented James Smith booked to take the ride, I have a feeling that he will be staying on strongly at the finish in a race which Gordon absolutely loves to win.
