Duke is clearly the team to beat in Charlotte. The Blue Devils finished the regular season with top-five national rankings in both offensive and defensive efficiency, an incredibly rare combination that makes them difficult to attack.
Everything runs through Cameron Boozer, who has established himself as the best player in college basketball this season. His ability to score inside, rebound, and facilitate offense makes Duke nearly impossible to defend in the halfcourt.
Duke will open Thursday against the winner of Florida State vs. California, a matchup the Blue Devils will be heavily favored in. The biggest threat likely comes in the semifinals, but even then Duke’s depth, defense, and Boozer’s star power make them extremely difficult to knock off.

Virginia enters the tournament as the No. 2 seed and the second betting choice, though still well behind Duke in the odds.
The Cavaliers benefit from the same double-bye structure as Duke and won’t play until Thursday’s quarterfinals. Their opening matchup will come against the winner of NC State vs. Stanford/Pitt, a game Virginia should control if they play to their defensive identity.
UVA teams always thrive in tournament settings because of their methodical style and elite defense. The problem is that Virginia’s offense can struggle to keep pace with explosive teams like Duke, which makes their potential championship matchup extremely difficult.

Louisville sits right in the middle of the contenders and could be a sneaky team to watch this week.
The Cardinals open Wednesday against the winner of SMU vs. Syracuse, and if they advance they would likely face Miami in the quarterfinals. Louisville has shown flashes of being able to compete with anyone in the league, but injuries have raised concerns down the stretch.
Freshman star Mikel Brown Jr. has been dealing with injury issues late in the regular season, and his availability could significantly affect Louisville’s ceiling. If healthy, however, the Cardinals have the talent to make a deep run.

Miami enters as the No. 3 seed and has one of the most favorable paths in the bracket, and are coming in as one of the hottest teams, winners of 8 of their last 10.
The Hurricanes will begin Thursday against the winner of Louisville vs. SMU/Syracuse, and they have the offensive firepower to overwhelm opponents when their perimeter shooting is clicking.
Miami’s biggest challenge would likely come in the semifinals, where a potential clash with Virginia looms. If the Hurricanes can push the tempo and create scoring opportunities in transition, they could be one of the few teams capable of challenging Duke later in the tournament.

North Carolina would normally be considered one of the biggest threats to Duke, but injuries have complicated their outlook.
The Tar Heels lost freshman star Caleb Wilson for the season with a broken thumb, leaving them with a noticeable talent gap compared to the Blue Devils. Despite that setback, UNC still enters as the No. 4 seed and will open against the winner of Clemson vs. Virginia Tech/Wake Forest.
North Carolina still has enough talent and athleticism to compete with most teams in the conference, but their margin for error is much smaller without Wilson.

The Tigers begin Wednesday against the winner of Virginia Tech vs. Wake Forest, and if they advance they would likely face North Carolina in the quarterfinals.
Clemson has shown the ability to play physical, disciplined basketball, which often translates well in tournament environments. However, their path is extremely difficult and would likely require consecutive wins over UNC and Duke just to reach the championship game.
Who Has the Best Path to ACC Title?
With eight ACC teams projected to reach the NCAA Tournament, the conference tournament still carries major implications for several programs.
But when it comes to the championship itself, the conversation still revolves around one team. Even with injuries and the pressure of being the favorite, Duke remains the clear team to beat.
As long as Cameron Boozer continues his dominant freshman campaign, it will take a near-perfect performance from someone else in the bracket to prevent the Blue Devils from cutting down the nets in Charlotte.
Bubble Watch: SMU, NC State, and Virginia Tech
While Duke and the top seeds focus on the conference title, several bubble teams are fighting for NCAA Tournament survival.
SMU enters the tournament after a troubling four-game losing streak but still appears to be in the field as one of the Last Four In according to bracketologists. The Mustangs open Tuesday against Syracuse, and a win there would likely stabilize their position. A loss, however, would leave them nervously waiting on Selection Sunday.
NC State, projected around a No. 10 seed, is in a similar situation. The Wolfpack need at least one win to avoid potential trouble after their own late-season slide.
Meanwhile, Virginia Tech faces the steepest climb of any ACC bubble team. The Hokies likely need three wins in the ACC Tournament to have a realistic chance of reaching the NCAA Tournament. That path would require victories over Wake Forest, Clemson, and North Carolina before potentially running into Duke.
