Everyone knows the top seeds in the NCAA Tournament bracket. The No. 1 and No. 2 seeds dominate most championship conversations every March. But the beauty of March Madness has always been the unpredictability, and every year a few teams outside the elite tier emerge as legitimate contenders.
History shows that deep runs from non-top seeds are more common than many people think. While a team seeded higher than No. 4 has only won the national title once in the last 35 years, teams seeded outside the top tier have regularly crashed the championship picture. In fact, a 5-seed and an 8-seed have reached the national championship game in two of the last three tournaments.
With that in mind, here are five sleepers outside the top two seeds that have the talent and profile to make a serious run in the 2026 NCAA Tournament.

Illinois might be the most dangerous No. 3 seed in the entire tournament. The Illini proved all season they can compete with anyone in the Big Ten and rank by far the highest among the 3-seeds in efficiency metrics, sitting ahead of several 2-seeds analytically. They boast the No. 2 most efficient offense in the country and rank top 6 nationally across major models like KenPom and Bart Torvik, fueled by a roster that blends elite freshman talent with experienced veterans.
Illinois rattled off 12 straight wins earlier this season and owns victories over Purdue, Nebraska, Texas Tech, Tennessee, Iowa, and several other tournament teams. Vanderbilt enters March Madness as one of the most intriguing sleeper teams after producing one of the best seasons in program history over the past decade. The Commodores reached the SEC Championship Game before falling just short against Arkansas, and despite being a 5-seed they rank top 10 nationally in efficiency metrics, higher than several teams seeded above them.
The backcourt duo of Tyler Tanner and Duke Miles has been electric down the stretch, while wing shooter Tyler Nickel provides dangerous spacing that makes this offense extremely difficult to defend. Vanderbilt thrives in transition and shares the ball well, making them capable of going on extended scoring runs during tournament games.
The Commodores open against McNeese State as an 11.5-point favorite, a talented mid-major they cannot afford to overlook. If they advance, a matchup with Nebraska or Troy likely awaits in the second round, a game where Vanderbilt would again be favored with a chance to reach the Sweet 16.

Tennessee may be one of the most underseeded teams in the tournament after playing portions of the season without star freshman Nate Ament, who has now returned and immediately made an impact. Ament delivered a dominant performance in the SEC Tournament and gives the Volunteers the kind of elite talent capable of taking over games in March.
Tennessee is supported by veterans Jakobi Gillespie and Felix Okpara, forming one of the strongest defensive cores in the country under head coach Rick Barnes.
