Kansas City Chiefs Preview

Although the Chiefs come into this SNF battle having won two straight and three of their last four overall, there are still massive concerns that this team is yet to address. One need not look any further than Kansas City’s 2-7 ATS record as evidence. The Chiefs continue to fall short of expectations and thus remain one of the worst teams against the NFL betting spread going back to last season. The once high-powered offense looked broken yet again last Sunday in a 13-7 win over the Green Bay Packers. Patrick Mahomes finished with only 166 yards passing. It was good to see tight end Travis Kelce rebound from a miserable Week 8 performance with 68 yards and a score on five receptions. Overall though, the Chiefs’ offense continues to struggle like nothing we have seen in recent seasons.

The fact that Kansas City got outgained by a Packers team that was playing without Aaron Rodgers says a lot about where Andy Reid’s offense is at right now. Can they make the proper adjustments moving forward to get Mahomes some of his confidence back? Fortunately, the Chiefs’ defense has been playing a lot better in recent weeks. In the team’s last three wins, Steve Spagnuolo’s unit has surrendered a combined total of just 37 points. For a defense that was allowing over 32 points per game earlier this year, that’s a marked improvement. Now the challenge will be to sustain that success against a more competent Raiders offense.

Las Vegas Raiders Preview

The Raiders dominated their Week 9 NFL betting game against the New York Giants statistically, yet still suffered a seven-point defeat. Repeated failures to finish off drives in the red zone came back to bite Las Vegas in the end. The Raiders also coughed up multiple turnovers, including a pair of interceptions by quarterback Derek Carr. One of those was returned 41 yards by Xavier McKinney for a score. Carr finished with nearly 300 yards passing on the afternoon but it wasn’t enough. The Raiders’ only touchdown came courtesy of a Carr pass to Hunter Renfrow.

Despite suffering the loss as NFL betting favorites, the Raiders did several things well. In the aftermath of the midweek situation involving former first-round draft pick Henry Ruggs III, Las Vegas went out and played a balanced game offensively. Tight end Darren Waller led the team with 92 yards receiving. Kenyan Drake continues to be a solid pass-catcher as a change-of-pace option to Josh Jacobs out of the backfield as well. The maligned Raiders’ defense held the Giants to just 245 total yards of offense in the game. Of particular note was the fact that only 96 of those came through the air. Despite injuries and a lack of talent, the secondary continues to overachieve.

Although the lines for this AFC West showdown have shifted, the adjustments have been fairly subtle thus far. The Chiefs have been bet down to 2.5-point favorites after opening at -3. However, the current point spread odds are heavily juiced towards Kansas City. This suggests that the line could get back to a full field goal before kickoff. The total has been bumped down a full point from the opening number of 53.5. Although the current NFL betting market consensus sits at 52.5, there are multiple Las Vegas sportsbooks listing 51.5 at the time of writing.

Despite their abysmal ATS record on the season, the majority of public bettors are laying the short number with the Chiefs this week. Currently, 65% of spread bets are on the visitors.

Raiders vs. Chiefs Betting Picks and Prediction

With nine weeks of data to go off of, it seems fair to say that the Chiefs offense of the past few years isn’t going to return any time soon. A combination of poor offensive line play and league-wide defensive adjustments have frustrated Patrick Mahomes greatly. He was fortunate not to add to his interception total against Green Bay last week.

For the Raiders, this SNF matchup sets up as an opportunity to both wipe away last week’s disappointing loss and pick up a huge divisional win all in one. While one could argue that the Chiefs’ offense might be able to get right against a suspect Las Vegas defense, the same argument could’ve been made when they faced average or worse defenses the past two weeks. Both times, Kansas City’s struggles continued. Lean towards backing the divisional dog at home as well as playing the total under.
