With Trey Lance being named the starting quarterback this season and for the future of the 49ers franchise, Jimmy Garoppolo's name has been swirling all offseason in trade rumors. Surprisingly, there is no interest, which is something the 49ers brass recently admitted.
Ahead of Thursday's final preseason game for the 49ers, John Lynch claimed they are "getting pretty close."
San Fransisco may be forced to cut Garoppolo or pay him his full guaranteed contract if he remains on the roster after September 10. That’s a $25.62 million predicament the 49ers are in. The 49ers can opt to hold Jimmy G and use him as a very expensive insurance policy for Trey Lance or cut him and allow him to sign with his team of choice.
Lynch also praised Jimmy Garoppolo in the pregame interview saying, "First of all, we owe so much to him, he’s been a tremendous leader, tremendous player for us. It’s a different situation having him there but I think there’s a strong foundation in our relationship and we’ll see where it goes. If it’ll come together where he’s a part of us and if so, we’re happy to have him knowing that this is Trey’s team and knowing we will have some strength in that room. And if someone wants to come and offer us a whole lot for a really great QB, then we’ll be happy to listen."
In 8 NFL seasons, Garoppolo has gone 33-14 with a 98.9 rating, throwing 71 TDs, with 38 interceptions, averaging 8.4 yds per attempt. He is 5-2 as a postseason starter with a 74.1 rating. He won two Super Bowls as the New England Patriots backup.
Jimmy Garoppolo started 15 games for the 49ers in 2021 throwing for 3,810 yards 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Injuries have been an issue for him though as he started just three games in 2018 and six games in 2020.

The Seattle Seahawks remain in the driver's seat to land Jimmy Garoppolo. After trading away Russell Wilson, the Seahawks will be starting Geno Smith at the quarterback position in Week 1 as he beat out Drew Lock for the starting job. Jimmy G would immediately make this Seahawks team more competitive though.
There's a possibility here we can see Jimmy G starting for Seattle at some point in October and oddsmakers are giving the Seahawks a 28% chance of acquiring the veteran quarterback.
Texans (+400) (Bet $100 to win $400)
The Texans remain second by oddsmakers to acquire Garoppolo. Houston has second-year quarterback Davis Mills who has shown signs of promise and improvements. Jimmy Garoppolo would certainly be an upgrade though for this young Houston team.
Buccaneers (+850) (Bet $100 to win $850)
Tampa Bay is the most intriguing to me as it would be a calculated move by Jimmy G to once again be Tom Brady's backup but with the intention of taking over the starting quarterback job after this season when the GOAT truly decides to hang it up.
