Head Coach Matt Rhule Fired by the Carolina Panthers on Monday Morning

The Carolina Panthers have announced that they've fired Matt Rhule as head coach of the football program. Steve Wilks will be the interim head coach for the season. Wilks was head coach of the Cardinals for one season.

Matt Rhule Fired

The Panthers are just 1-4 to start the season after a 37-15 loss to Carolina on Sunday. Multiple reports by different media outlets suggested that Rhule would be fired today.

Those reports were accurate despite quarterback Baker Mayfield acknowledging that the locker room was still together. Mayfield blamed the lack of progress on little execution by the players themselves. He stated that the guys just need to make plays.

Meanwhile, Christian McCaffrey acknowledged that the critics of Coach Rhule bothered him. McCaffrey said Rhule's always had his back and still had confidence in Rhule as a head coach after losing to the 49ers. According to his contract, Rhule will now be owed over $40 million from Carolina. He was 11-27 as head coach of the Panthers.

He never had a reliable quarterback and coached a couple of years where Christian McCaffrey was hurt for most weeks. There are currently no odds out for the next head coach of the Panthers but some names that could fill the role are Sean Payton, Dan Quinn, Brian Flores, and Dabo Swinney.

The Panthers would need to trade draft picks to the Saints in order to hire Payton as he is still under club control. Dabo just signed a massive extension with Clemson but the NFL would present a new challenge for him. Dan Quinn would provide the stability of a former head coach in the NFL with a proven track record of success. Eric Bieniemy should also be on the radar as well as 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans.
