2022 NFL MVP Odds: Power Rankings Heading into Week 9

The NFL was on full display in Week 8 with incredible performances across the board. It was another week filled with parity but dominant teams exploded with points and defensive prowess to end the second month of the season with momentum.

Geno Smith and the Seattle Seahawks continue to lead the NFC West after a big win over the red-hot New York Giants, but the San Francisco 49ers also have its newest addition finding his way into the MVP race for the first time this season. Jalen Hurts lit up Pittsburgh for four touchdowns, improving his odds and hurdling Patrick Mahomes while on a bye. A decisive primetime win against Tampa Bay on a short week saw Lamar Jackson's odds improve from 12/1 to 10/1, and Tua Tagovailoa cracks the top ten after mounting yet another comeback win for the Miami Dolphins.

Here we rank the top ten MVP candidates and explain why each player deserves to be tailed or faded at their current MVP odds. Which players have improved their outlook, and which ones have seen their MVP stock drop?

NFL MVP Power Rankings

1. Josh Allen (+120) (Bet $100 Collect $220) Best odds available at DraftKings (click here)

The odds have settled at +120 for Buffalo's superstar quarterback. Josh Allen once again led the Bills to an early lead against Green Bay in a primetime beatdown, connecting with Stefon Diggs and Dawson Knox to jump out to a 24-7 lead at halftime. The fifth-year franchise quarterback continues to be a true dual-threat player, using his physicality and speed to keep defenses honest with his talent, while possessing a rocket arm with high-caliber targets within the offense. You can still get plus odds on Allen, which could dry up and flip to minus odds if he keeps dominantly stacking wins. Based on the rest of the season schedule, it may be a good idea to place your bets on Allen now.

2. Jalen Hurts (+350) (Bet $100 Collect $450) Best odds available at DraftKings (click here)

Philadelphia came out of its Bye Week with energy and ambition, resulting in third-year quarterback Jalen Hurts finishing the day with 285 yards and four touchdowns. While Hurts has sat inside of the top five for the majority of the season, his lack of passing touchdowns in three of the first four games began to get questioned. He wasted no time in a plus-matchup on Sunday, airing it out frequently to star wideout A.J. Brown, connecting for three touchdowns in the first half. As long as the Eagles continue to win with their current style, Hurts has a good chance to wind up usurping Josh Allen for the MVP. +350 is a really good value to get for Hurts' current level of production.

3. Patrick Mahomes (+400) (Bet $100 Collect $500) Best odds available at DraftKings (click here)

Kansas City was one of only two teams on Bye in Week 8 but Patrick Mahomes remains firmly in the top three odds for the 2022 NFL MVP. He won back in 2018 and has shown similar sparks of greatness throughout 2022, finishing four of seven games with at least three passing touchdowns. The remarkable feat is that the Chiefs have a plus-51 point differential while being a spotty defense, which is a testament to Mahomes' skill and ability under center. +400 feels like great value before he goes on a tear out of the Bye against the Tennessee secondary in Week 9.

4. Lamar Jackson (+1000) (Bet $100 Collect $1100) Best odds available at DraftKings (click here)

Turning down a contract extension this offseason, Lamar Jackson indicated that he is betting on himself in 2022. So far, it's worked out in his favor. After narrowly beating Cleveland, the Miami native returned to Florida and won decisively against Tom Brady and the Bucs in primetime. Jackson threw two touchdowns in the third quarter and ripped off a couple of impressive runs to convert some key downs to keep Baltimore in control. Jackson improved his odds from Week 7 but he is still a decent distance outside of the top-three MVP discussion, so I'd fade betting on him until we see this type of outing consistently.

5. Joe Burrow (+1600) (Bet $100 Collect $1700) Best odds available at DraftKings (click here)

Cincinnati is on a mini two-game winning streak and Joe Burrow has been the focal point of it all. Losing star wideout Ja'Marr Chase to a hip injury for four to six weeks is tough to overcome, but Burrow still has Tee Higgins and Tyler Boyd to lean on, while running back Joe Mixon could take on a bigger role in the passing game out of the backfield. The Bengals have one of the best defenses in the league right now and Burrow's strong, accurate arm allows the team to stay competitive in difficult matchups. The schedule is soft through November, so betting on Burrow right now at +1200 is great value to acquire.

6. Geno Smith (+2800) (Bet $100 Collect $2900) Best odds available at DraftKings (click here)

Seattle is firing on all cylinders despite what everyone expected to be a rebuilding season. The reason is Geno Smith. The veteran journeyman is now up from +4000 to +2800 to win the MVP after leading the Seahawks 27-13 over the previously one-loss New York Giants in Week 8. Smith has yet to throw for three touchdowns but he's playing turnover-free football and completing over 65 percent of his passes to D.K. Metcalf and Tyler Lockett. Road contests against Arizona and Tampa Bay will tell us exactly whether or not Smith can continue climbing the MVP race odds. For now, I'm holding, but I love the comeback story.

7. Justin Herbert (+2800) (Bet $100 Collect $2900) Best odds available at DraftKings (click here)

One of the busiest arms in the league belongs to Justin Herbert. The Chargers' third-year quarterback has attempted over 50 passes in each of his previous games against Denver and Seattle, who are both difficult to play against due to rostering talented secondaries. Herbert was the only other quarterback on a Week 8 Bye but he will get a cake matchup against Atlanta in Week 9, which could see his MVP odds surge upward before tough games against San Francisco and Kansas City. The Chargers are a tough team to predict, but Herbert has all the talent to overcome these obstacles. +2800 is fantastic value, especially if Los Angeles can win its next three games.

8. Kirk Cousins (+4000) (Bet $100 Collect $4100) Best odds available at DraftKings (click here)

It may not be sexy, but Kirk Cousins wins football games. The Vikings are utilizing the veteran quarterback with high efficiency, as he completed 24 of 36 passes for 232 yards and two touchdowns in a big win over Arizona on Sunday. Minnesota will need to continue winning for Cousins to be a worthwhile investment, but if he finally gets going with 300 passing yards and three touchdowns in multiple games, watch his odds improve dramatically.

9. Christian McCaffery (+5000) (Bet $100 Collect $5100) Best odds available at DraftKings (click here)

The first appearance of Christian McCaffery in the top-ten MVP race has occurred. It took a trade to get the star running back onto a winning team, but McCaffery had a historic outing with the 49ers in Week 8, racking up three touchdowns as a passer, receiver, and ball carrier against the Los Angeles Rams. He's a strong, elusive back with speed and physicality, which all combine to make McCaffery one of the most valuable players in the league. It's a longshot at 50/1 odds, but if Kyle Shanahan continues dialing up plays for his newly acquired running back, this could be a tremendous payday for the only non-quarterback in the top ten.

10. Tua Tagovailoa (+5000) (Bet $100 Collect $5100) Best odds available at DraftKings (click here)

Miami went into Detroit and did their thing, which means waiting until the second half to mount a double-digit comeback. Tua Tagovailoa has played two games since returning from the scary concussion he sustained against Cincinnati earlier in the season. The first game against Pittsburgh wasn't spectacular, but Tagovailoa bounced back with 382 yards and three touchdowns against Detroit's bottom-tier defense in Week 8. Tagovailoa finished the day with a 138.7 QBR, playing a turnover-free game to deliver his second outing with over 350 passing yards this season. It's another longshot that could pay off if the Dolphins can continue ripping off huge chunk plays in the passing attack.
