NFL Quarterback Rankings: Ranking the Top 10 NFL Quarterbacks Heading Into Week 13

Week 12's NFL slate featured multiple games that were won and lost on the final play, including two overtime thrillers and two games that came down to pivotal two-point conversions in regulation. Unsurprisingly, Doug Pederson and Brandon Staley were behind the two decisions to go for two late in the fourth quarter, opting not to kick extra points and send their respective games to overtime. Both decisions worked in their favor, and the Jaguars and Chargers won after trailing for the majority of their games.

As has been the case for most of the 2022 season, league-wide quarterback play in Week 12 was a mixed bag. Some of the top QBs displayed their dominance, while others remained unable to consistently produce at a high level. So, let's dive into the top 10 NFL QB list.

NFL Quarterback Rankings

Patrick Mahomes has been the clear-cut MVP favorite for over a month, and he continues to solidify his standing as the best quarterback in football with stellar outing after stellar outing. In Week 12, Mahomes completed 27-of-42 passes for 320 yards, one touchdown, and one interception, leading the Chiefs to their fifth-straight win. He leads the NFL with 29 touchdown passes and 325.9 passing yards per game; he also has the second-highest QB rating at 77.3, trailing only Tua Tagovailoa in the category. While there was some discussion heading into the season about whether Mahomes had been surpassed by the likes of Josh Allen, the last few weeks of NFL action have thoroughly ended that line of debate. In terms of quarterback rankings, it's Mahomes and the field until proven otherwise.

Last Sunday, Tua Tagovailoa continued his red-hot run of play, carving up the Texans with such precision that he was pulled in the third quarter due to the point margin by which the Dolphins were leading. Tagovailoa has won each of his five games since returning from a concussion, throwing 11 touchdowns and no interceptions over the span. He leads the league in terms of QB rating and passer rating, which should not come as a surprise to anyone who has watched Miami's offense operate. Indeed, the unit has been so strong that it has uplifted a Dolphins defense that has largely disappointed; Miami is tied with Buffalo for the division lead at 8-3.

Heading into Week 12, Jalen Hurts had not been in top form. Weeks 10 and 11 had gone poorly for the Eagles' offense, with the unit falling flat against the Commanders in a loss and following that up by scraping across 17 points against the Colts — just enough to secure the win. Hurts and the offense rebounded last week, though, hanging 40 points on the Packers in prime time. Hurts was outstanding on the ground — rushing for a franchise-record 157 yards — and efficient through the air (16-for-28, two touchdowns, zero interceptions). The Eagles hold the NFL's top record at 10-1, and Hurts deserves some credit for that accomplishment.

Justin Herbert moves up to fourth after sitting around sixth for the last few weeks, and deservingly so. Herbert was outstanding on Sunday, completing 35-of-47 passes for 274 yards and three touchdowns. He was clutch down the stretch, leading a game-winning drive that ended with an Austin Ekeler touchdown catch and a successful two-point conversion. Herbert has not had much help this season — both of his top aerial targets have missed extended time, while his star left tackle has not seen the field since Week 3 — but he has managed to drag the Chargers into the playoff picture. He ranks top 8 in terms of touchdown passes, passing yards per game, and QB rating — all statistics heavily influenced by the context surrounding the quarterback at hand. Mahomes is easily the MVP, but if Herbert can get this Chargers team into the postseason, he might get my second-place vote.

Josh Allen was the best quarterback in football during the early portion of the season, throwing for 19 touchdowns and six interceptions over his first seven games (6-1 over the span). Since then, though, he has been sporadic, tossing four touchdowns and five interceptions (2-2). Last week against the Lions, he missed multiple throws in key spots that he would normally execute without a second thought, raising questions about the severity of the injury in his throwing arm The Bills managed to escape with the Thanksgiving-day win, but the Bills' passing offense did not exactly instill confidence in viewers. Moving forward, Allen has the potential to move up or down the rankings, based on the extent to which his inconsistencies continue to surface.

Joe Burrow has been quietly putting together his best professional campaign to date. In the 10 games since his disastrous season-opener, Burrow has thrown 21 touchdowns and just four interceptions, leading Cincinnati to a 7-3 record over the span. On the year, he ranks top 6 in the league in terms of passer rating, passing touchdowns, and passing yards per game. With Ja'Marr Chase set to return from his injury absence, keep an eye out for this Bengals team down the stretch. While their remaining schedule is a gauntlet (KC, CLE, TB, NE, BUF, BAL), this is a team well-positioned to make another deep playoff run.

Lamar Jackson is in a similar boat as Josh Allen. Jackson and the Ravens' offense began the year on a tear, but they have since come back to earth, failing to score 24 or more points in five of their last eight games. In Week 12, they squandered a late lead against the Jaguars, losing a game that they absolutely should have won. Jackson was inconsistent in the loss, completing just 50% of his passes and losing a fumble. It's worth noting that the Ravens' receiver core has been terrible, to put it mildly—beyond Mark Andrews, Jackson has not had any receiving targets that would start on most teams. As such, take the spotty passing output of this offense with a grain of salt.

Geno Smith has been one of the best stories of the 2022 season, outplaying most starting quarterbacks despite entering the season with the reputation of a career backup. He and the Seahawks have regressed a bit, losing their last two games after winning four straight. Smith still ranks top 5 in terms of QB rating, passer rating, and passing touchdowns, a testament to the strength of his overall body of work. It will be interesting to see if Seattle can rebound, or if they are destined to fade down the stretch as the lack of talent on their roster finally drags them down.

Dak Prescott has only played roughly half as many games as every other quarterback on the list due to his injury absence; as such, determining where he stands is a tricky process. He ranks top 8 in terms of QB rating, passer rating, and completion percentage, demonstrating his efficiency over the six games that he has played. Given the success of the Cowboys' offense over the last month or so — the unit is averaging 33.8 points per game since Prescott's return — it wouldn't be fair to leave him off the list entirely. Ninth seems like a reasonable compromise for now, but he has room to move up if he continues his stellar form.

Kirk Cousins has never been the type of quarterback who struck anyone as a true difference-maker, but he has run the Vikings' new offensive system quite well. His year-to-date statistics reflect that — he has 17 touchdown passes, nine interceptions, and 2760 passing yards. The Vikings are 9-2, and Cousins deserves some credit for that, even if wins and losses are generally not the best way to evaluate quarterbacks.
