Denver Broncos Head Coach Nathaniel Hackett

NFL Rumors: Nathaniel Hackett, Kliff Kingsbury the Favorites to be the Next NFL Head Coach Fired

Both Nathaniel Hackett and Kliff Kingsbury are in deep trouble. Neither is likely to hang on to their job after a hugely disappointing season. Which one will lose their job first though? The books think it’ll be the Broncos' head coach.

Hackett is given -125 odds, or an implied 55.6% chance to be the next head coach fired. This would be a major change in Denver, as they’ve only ever fired three head coaches in a season before. That said, new ownership brings new decisions and that could mean curtains for Hackett.

Meanwhile, Kingsbury is given +230 odds, or an implied 30.3% chance to be the next head coach fired. The Cardinals are even more loyal than the Broncos are, since moving to Phoenix in 1988, the Cardinals have fired just one head coach mid-season, and that was in 1989. Could a playoff team that turned one of the five worst in the NFL be enough to overturn over 30 years of precedent?

There’s also an outside shot that it’s neither of these two. The Raiders’ Josh McDaniels is given +800 odds, or an 11.1% chance to be the next head coach fired. The Texans’ Lovie Smith is right behind him at +850, or an implied 10.5% chance. The Raiders certainly aren’t afraid to make mid-season moves, having done so just last season. The Texans have had six head coaches prior to Smith, two of them were fired midseason. If a move is going to happen before the end of the year, it wouldn’t be a shock in the least if either of these teams made the move.

It’s clear that Hackett and Kingsbury are going to lose their jobs. The only question here is if that happens in the next few weeks or if these teams wait until the season is over. That’s why there’s a slight crack in the door that could see more aggressive teams make changes before they do. For now, though, the books clearly believe that Denver is going to make a move on Hackett sometime soon with new ownership looking to make their stamp on the team.
