The Los Angeles Chargers suffered another one-possession loss on the road, this time against the below-average Green Bay Packers. Brandon Staley is squarely on the hot seat, and he could be the next NFL coach to be fired.
The Chargers fell to 4-6 after Sunday's 23-20 loss to the Packers, that involved rookie WR Quentin Johnston dropping a wide open ball from Justin Herbert to either help them tie the game or win it with a few minutes remaining.
Brandon Staley is now 23-21 in his third year with the Chargers, a mediocre record given the talent available on the roster. While his teams have been riddled with injuries, he has continually fallen short in close games, and many are calling for his exit.
He wouldn't be the first coach to go this year, after the Las Vegas Raiders sent Josh McDaniels packing just a year and a half into his tenure. He had a 9-16 record and left a trail of turmoil in the locker room that ultimately led to his demise. Will Staley follow McDaniels out the door, or will Ron Rivera be the next to go?

Staley has essentially been on the hot seat throughout his time in Los Angeles, and 2023 seemed like his final chance to figure it out. He now has +150 odds to be the next one out of a job, putting him at a 40% probability of being first.
Sitting at last place in the AFC West, it doesn't any easier for the Chargers down the stretch. They are behind even the Raiders with an interim coach, and have several tough divisional matchups remaining on the schedule.
When not battling the Chiefs, Broncos, and Raiders, they will have to take on the Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills elsewhere in the AFC, and their outlook doesn't look great in those games. The Chargers now have unlikely +360 odds to make the playoffs, and without a significant improvement towards that goal, Staley will be relieved of his duties.
Ron Rivera Odds
While it seems like a when, not if, proposition on Staley getting fired, that may be the name of the game with these latest odds. Ron Rivera could beat the Chargers to the punch after his embarrassing loss to the New York Giants on Sunday.
The Washington Commanders had five turnovers in a 31-19 home defeat to the lowly Giants, despite being 9-point favorites against a third-string quarterback. Ron Rivera will have to shoulder the blame for that, as the Commanders fall to 4-7 and all-but eliminated themselves from playoff contention.
The Commanders go on the road to Dallas on Thanksgiving as 10-point underdogs, in what could easily be Rivera's final game in the event of a blowout loss. He has +300 odds to be the next coach fired, giving him a 25% chance to bite the bullet first. Keep an eye on that contest, as these situational matchups could spell the end of several coaching careers.
