3 minSUPER BOWL LINE MOVEMENT
Super Bowl 58 has seen plenty of line movement since the AFC and NFC Championship games concluded on January 28th. We're specifically focused on the point spread, which has hovered between -2.5 and -1.5 in favor of the San Francisco 49ers.
Opening at 49ers -2.5, the line quickly shot down to -1, before climbing back up to -2.5 for the duration of this past week. However, in the past 48 hours, as we approach kickoff, more money is coming in on Kansas City as an underdog, moving the line down to 49ers -1.5.
Clearly, oddsmakers believe that this matchup will be tightly contested, with the 49ers possessing a potent offense, while the Chiefs' secondary has been air-tight all season. Patrick Mahomes is coming off of his second Super Bowl MVP in four years, and now, he's an underdog against Brock Purdy, which creates plenty of compelling narratives surrounding Super Bowl 58.
The key will be whether or not Kansas City can sustain drives with an offense that is condensed to just a couple of players. Mahomes is among the best at evading pressure in the pocket, often looking to find his favorite target, star tight end Travis Kelce, which has been highly effective during the Chiefs' current dynasty run.
Kansas City is 6-0 in their last six games as an underdog, while they've won outright against San Francisco in three straight head-to-head matchups, including a late comeback win in Super Bowl 54. San Francisco has also failed to cover the spread as favorites against AFC West opponents in six straight appearances.
