Chiefs Playoff Odds: Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs Dynasty Looks Bleak After Another Primetime Loss

The Kansas City Chiefs walked into Sunday night football needing a statement win, and instead delivered their most concerning performance of the Patrick Mahomes era. A 20-10 loss to the Houston Texans exposed every weakness this team has battled all season, particularly on offense where Mahomes threw three interceptions and never found a rhythm. Houston’s elite defense suffocated Kansas City from the opening drive, and the Chiefs fell to 6-7 on the year. It is a stunning collapse for a franchise that has defined AFC dominance for the last half decade.

Now, the Chiefs sit in the same 6-7 hole as the Ravens, a situation no one could have predicted when the season kicked off. Kansas City has appeared in five of the last six Super Bowls and won three of them, but the dynasty energy has evaporated with injuries, inconsistency, and an offense that looks unrecognizable from the explosive unit fans are used to.

Even the return of Rashee Rice from suspension provided only a brief spark. The offensive line is battered, pass protection is unreliable, and Matt Nagy’s scheme has delivered some of the most stagnant football the Mahomes era has seen. The Chiefs no longer control their own destiny, and that reality is settling in across the AFC.

Chiefs Playoff Odds

The playoff outlook is bleak. Kansas City sits well behind the Texans in the Wild Card race, losing both the head to head tiebreaker and now trailing by two full games. The Broncos have taken firm control of the AFC West with -1000 division odds, leaving the Chiefs with no realistic shot to climb back into contention there. Meanwhile, both Houston and the Chargers have the advantage in the Wild Card race, with Los Angeles sitting at -210 to make the playoffs despite their own injury issues. The Texans are an overwhelming -2200 to get in thanks to the tiebreakers they hold and their position alongside Jacksonville in the AFC South race.

Kansas City does have an easier remaining schedule, with matchups against the Raiders, Cardinals, and Titans, but so do the Texans and Chargers. That leaves the Chiefs hoping the Chargers stumble badly, ideally starting with Monday night’s game against the Eagles. But even that scenario may not save them. Oddsmakers have Kansas City at +370 to make the postseason and -600 to miss it, implying an 85% chance that the five year playoff streak ends. Given how dysfunctional the offense has been and how many key units continue to break down, that projection feels warranted.

Chiefs Super Bowl Odds

As for the Super Bowl, the Chiefs have crashed to +4500 odds, a total freefall from the top tier where they have lived for half a decade. Bettors and sportsbooks alike have effectively moved past Kansas City as a title threat. Even if they were to sneak into the final Wild Card spot, this roster does not resemble a group capable of navigating three or four straight playoff games against elite AFC competition.

The dynasty is not officially over, but the path back to the mountaintop is steeper than it has ever been in the Mahomes era, and 2025 may ultimately be remembered as the year the postseason streak snapped and the window finally showed its first true signs of closing.
