Patriots Coach Odds: Is there a Chance Mike Vrabel Steps Down Before 2026 Season Amid Controversy?

Mike Vrabel remains the clear favorite to be the Patriots’ head coach in Week 1 of the 2026 season, even after a messy month off the field. In the market shown here, Vrabel sits at 75%, with Josh McDaniels at 22% and Mike Tomlin at 7%, which tells you bettors still believe New England is far more likely to ride this out than make a sudden coaching change.

That confidence comes despite a very public controversy involving Vrabel and former reporter Dianna Russini. Vrabel briefly stepped away from the team for counseling after photos surfaced, Russini resigned from The Athletic, and the story exploded across league circles. Still, Reuters reported that Vrabel returned to the Patriots within days, while the NFL said no discipline was expected, which helps explain why his odds remain so strong.

Patriots Week 1 Coach Odds Breakdown

Mike Vrabel — 75% Chance Bet on Patriots Coaching Odds with Kalshi Here

Vrabel is still the overwhelming favorite because the football case for keeping him is obvious. He took over before the 2025 season and immediately led New England from 4-13 to 14-3, won NFL Coach of the Year, and got the Patriots all the way to Super Bowl LX, where they lost to Seattle. ESPN and NBC also noted that the Patriots had a very favorable schedule last season, so there is skepticism about how repeatable that run is, but it was still a massive turnaround in Year 1.

The bigger question is whether the scandal changes Robert Kraft’s appetite for stability. Right now, the signs point to no. Reuters reported that Vrabel returned to the team, addressed the players, and still has visible support from locker-room leaders like Hunter Henry and Robert Spillane. If the Patriots were preparing to move on quickly, the market likely would not still have him sitting around three-to-one implied against the field.

Josh McDaniels — 22% Chance Bet on Patriots Coaching Odds with Kalshi Here

McDaniels is the natural fallback because he is already in the building and was viewed as a major part of New England’s offensive success under Vrabel. ESPN had previously framed the Patriots as a team that hired “the right coaches” in Vrabel and McDaniels, and if ownership decided the off-field damage was too much, promoting a familiar internal figure would be the least disruptive move.

That said, 22% still suggests this is more contingency plan than active transition. McDaniels has history with the franchise and with Drake Maye’s development path, but there has been no strong reporting that New England is actually preparing to hand him the top job. His number looks more like the market respecting the obvious emergency option than predicting an imminent change.

Mike Tomlin — 7% Chance Bet on Patriots Coaching Odds with Kalshi Here

Tomlin is the longshot name on the board, and that seems tied more to leaguewide reputation than to any concrete Patriots momentum. ESPN podcast coverage referenced the shocking news of Tomlin stepping down in Pittsburgh, which helps explain why he even appears in a market like this, because a coach of his stature instantly becomes a speculative candidate anywhere a high-profile opening could emerge.

But at 7%, the market is basically saying this is still unlikely. There has been plenty of noise around Vrabel, but not much evidence that the Patriots are actually nearing a full reset, and jumping from Vrabel to an outside splash like Tomlin would be a dramatic move. Unless the situation worsens significantly, this looks much more like a name-based flyer than a serious favorite path.
