What is the Hot Dog Eating Contest Record?

Every Fourth of July, millions tune in to witness the ultimate display of competitive eating at Coney Island. While the event is filled with pageantry and spectacle, at its core lies a serious athletic endeavor defined by strict numbers.

When it comes to the definitive world records for the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest, two names stand entirely alone at the top of the history books: Joey Chestnut and Miki Sudo.

Below is the definitive breakdown of the official men's and women's world records.

The Men's World Record: Joey Chestnut (76 HDB)

The official world record for the men's division stands at an astonishing 76 hot dogs and buns (HDB) in 10 minutes, set by Joey "Jaws" Chestnut on July 4, 2021.

During the 2021 championship, which was held at a modified venue at Maimonides Park due to pandemic-related capacity restrictions, Chestnut averaged an incredible 7.6 hot dogs and buns per minute.

He bested his own previous world record of 75 HDB, which he had established just one year prior in 2020. To put his dominance into perspective, Chestnut out-ate the second-place finisher in 2021 by a margin of 29.25 hot dogs.

In a Netflix special against Takeru Kobayashi, Chesnut ate a remarkable 83 hot dogs in 10 minutes.

The Women's World Record: Miki Sudo (51 HDB)

In the women's division, the official world record belongs to Miki Sudo, who consumed 51 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes on July 4, 2024.

Sudo’s historic performance in 2024 shattered her own previous world record of 48.5 HDB, which she had set back in 2020.

By eclipsing the elusive 50-dog threshold, Sudo cemented her legacy as the most dominant female competitive eater in history, further distancing herself from the legendary Sonya "The Black Widow" Thomas, whose early division record of 45 HDB had stood for nearly a decade.

How the Official Records Are Counted

Major League Eating enforces a strict set of rules during the 10-minute competition to ensure the validity of these records:

  • The "HDB" Standard: For a hot dog to count toward the official record, the competitor must consume both the hot dog and the entire bun.
  • The Dipping Method: Competitors are permitted to separate the hot dog from the bun. They frequently dip the buns into cups of water or warm liquids to soften the bread, allowing them to compress and swallow it more rapidly.
  • Clean Eating and Penalties: Any significant dropping or spilling of food can result in a deduction. Furthermore, competitors must keep all food down during the 10 minutes and for a short period after the final buzzer; any "reversal of fortune" results in immediate disqualification.
  • Sudden-Death Overtime: In the rare event of a dead-even tie when the clock hits zero, the record books are paused for a sudden-death eat-off, where the first competitor to fully consume an additional hot dog and bun claims the victory.
