How Many Senate Seats Will Democrats Win? 2026 Senate Seat Odds

Prediction markets expect Democrats to finish the 2026 midterms with 52 or more Senate seats. On Kalshi, "more than 52 seats" is the single most likely outcome at about 54%, followed by exactly 52 at 15% and exactly 51 at 7%. Democrats currently hold 47 seats, so any of those would mean a Senate majority.

The seat-count market is Kalshi's most traded Senate market after the control and balance-of-power markets, with about $14 million traded. Trade it with Kalshi promo code ODDSCHECKER, or try Polymarket's seat markets with promo code CHECK, when you sign up through oddschecker.

Kalshi also runs a "higher strikes" market for bigger wins. There, Democrats holding exactly 53 seats traded at about 13-14% in late October, with fewer than 53 at about 62%.

Why 51 is the magic number

Republicans hold the Senate 53-47. If the chamber ends up 50-50, Vice President JD Vance breaks ties for Republicans, so Democrats need 51 seats, a net gain of four, for control. That's why the "51" and "52" contracts carry so much interest: they're the narrow paths to a majority.

How the races add up

Thirty-five Senate seats are on the ballot: 33 regular races plus special elections in Florida and Ohio. As of October 28, Kalshi traders favored Democrats in 18 of them and Republicans in 17, with Iowa the only race rated a toss-up. The key races behind the seat count:

  • Texas: James Talarico (D) 74% vs Ken Paxton (R)
  • Michigan: Abdul El-Sayed (D) 81% vs Mike Rogers (R)
  • Ohio: Sherrod Brown (D) 71% vs Jon Husted (R)
  • Maine: Troy Jackson (D) 73% vs Susan Collins (R)
  • Iowa: Ashley Hinson (R) about 47% vs Josh Turek (D)
  • Alaska: Democrats priced at about 70% in Mary Peltola's race against Senator Dan Sullivan (R)

Kalshi also lists a market on whether Democrats sweep the "core four" Senate races, which traded at about 66% on November 3.

Seat counts vs Senate control: which to trade?

The Senate control market only asks who wins, so it pays the same whether Democrats finish with 51 seats or 55. Seat-count markets pay more because you have to pick the exact number, or a range. If you think Democrats win but only just, exactly 51 at 10¢ pays 90¢ per contract, far more than buying Democratic control at about 65¢.

Polymarket also lists seat markets, including Republican Senate seats after the midterms. Compare prices on our US politics odds page.

When does the seat-count market settle?

Kalshi's market settles on the Senate's composition on February 1, 2027. That allows time for recounts and certification, but it also means your money may be tied up until then unless you sell early. Check the market rules for how independents who caucus with a party are counted.
