Don’t look now, but the Cardinals are heating up. St. Louis still owns the worst record in the National League, but they’ve won six of their previous ten, including a sweep in Boston this past weekend. Are the Cardinals back, or were the hitting conditions just perfect for Nolan Arenado and the rest of the Cards?

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Milwaukee Brewers Prediction

It is no secret that both Arenado and the Cardinals like hitting in Boston. To be fair, everyone does, considering Fenway Park has some of the best hitting conditions of any ballpark. The Cardinals’ third basemen were 7 for 14 with three home runs against the Red Sox over the weekend, but the borderline Hall of Famer always hits well in Boston. If you watched the majority of his at-bats in that series, you’d notice Arenado is still trying to get comfortable at the plate. Now that the Cardinals are heading back home, their offense should come back down to earth.

The Cardinals will be facing a much better arm tonight than Corey Kluber and the rest of that atrocious Red Sox’s rotation. Tonight, they face Freddy Peralta, who’s been great for the Brewers since his return from injury in 2023. The 26-year-old is currently in the 87th percentile in Whiff% this season. Although the Cardinals don’t strike out often, Peralta has 15 strikeouts in his last two starts.

The right-hander is already in mid-season form and should dominate the Cardinals on their home field tonight. Jack Flaherty’s return to the Cardinals rotation has been a rollercoaster. The crafty right-hander started the season strong but has since been inconsistent. After giving up ten runs in two innings against the Angels, Flaherty bounced back in Chicago last week, giving up three only runs.

Considering Flaherty’s inconsistencies on the mound, and the Brewers coming off a three game sweep against Kansas City, you’d think the Brew Crew would be getting more respect than barely being the favorite at (-115). With the total opening at 8 and the odds slowly creeping down towards the under, this is a great sign for Flaherty. Oddsmakers are expecting this one to be closer and lower scoring than the public might initially expect after the Cards just put up 21 runs in Boston.

Don’t let recency bias fool you; this Cardinals offense has underperformed for the majority of the season. Their recent offensive outburst can be attributed to playing in Fenway Park against sub-par arms. Tonight against a significantly better starting pitcher and one of the best bullpens in baseball, the Cardinals' offense will regress now that they’re back home. After both of these teams put up a combined 39 runs, ignore your recency bias and back the under at Busch Stadium.
