Before the season, experts and analysts were down on the Boston Red Sox. Their pitching looked suspect, and the offensive pieces they added were undervalued. Nobody knew how much gas Justin Turner had left in the tank, and nobody knew just how good Masataka Yoshida really is. Now a quarter through the season, the Red Sox are three games above .500 and only 1.5 games back in the AL Wildcard race. Facing the Seattle Mariners tonight, will the Red Sox continue to prove doubters wrong and defeat the Mariners for the second night in a row?

Boston Red Sox vs. Seattle Mariners Prediction
Brayan Bello is a young arm in the Boston system who the Red Sox are very high on. The 24-year-old got rocked in his first two starts of the season but has settled in nicely in his previous three starts. The young righty has only allowed five earned runs over his last sixteen innings, bringing his ERA down nearly two runs.
Tonight he faces a Seattle team who’s struggled offensively in 2023. A bottom-five team in batting average, hits, and OBP, the Mariners have found a way to manufacture more runs this season than expected. With how terribly the Mariners have swung the bat this year, they rank 14th in baseball in runs produced. Their run production is due to regress with how poorly they’ve performed at the plate this season.
Baseball is weird. Some pitchers simply don’t get run support when they’re on the bump, and some guys (like Cal Quantrill or Martin Perez) get plenty of offensive support. Bello has been blessed with plenty of run support since his 2022 debut with Boston. The Red Sox are 4-1 in Bello’s five starts this year, giving him plenty of run support on a consistence basis. When Bello pitched, the Red Sox scored runs. It doesn’t hurt that the Red Sox are facing a subpar lefty in one of the most hitter-friendly ballparks in baseball, either.
Marco Gonzales has pitched better of late, but the Mariner’s veteran arm still owns a 4.42 ERA through seven starts. Pitching in Fenway Park against one of the best offenses in baseball with a total set at 9.5 doesn’t make me think that Gonzales is pitching a gem tonight.
The Red Sox have both the offensive and pitching advantage in this contest tonight. Boston opened up a (-120) favorite but has since been steamed up to (-130) on most books. Back the Red Sox with the line movement on their side as they look to repeat their offensive performance from last night. Boston at home this year has been debatably the best offense in baseball, and I don’t see them slowing down anytime soon.
