This series has also been followed by controversy as Domingo Germán was ejected from his start due to some type of illegal or sticky substance on his hand and Aaron Judge was also seen peeking into the dugout right before he hit a game-winning home run which led to speculation on whether or not the Yankees were relaying signs. I can’t speak to the accuracy of German‘s situation but the controversy surrounding Judge seems to be nonsense as he simply took a slight peek into the dugout and has not replicated that sort of eye movement in any of his subsequent at bats.
The Blue Jays then won a thriller last night in an extra inning game by the score of 3-0 behind an incredible performance by Chris Bassitt and Jordan Romano on the back end of their bullpen. Tonight we have another interesting pitching matchup between two guys who have been very hot and cold this season. Nestor Cortes for the Yankees had a breakout year last year as he was one of the top pitchers in the American League but has struggled so far in 2023. He has been hit extremely hard and has given up a lot of homers so far on the young season.
On the other side, we have Jose Berrios who was terrible last year for the Blue Jays and has somewhat bounced back in his 2023 campaign to this point, and has been even better at home throughout his first few starts of the year. We saw Berrios pitch extremely well against the likes of the Tampa Bay Rays and Atlanta Braves at home already this season, and I do think he will be able to continue his success in his home ballpark.
A huge key with both of these pitchers will be to keep the ball inside the ballpark. Both of these squads love to slug, and Berrios has only allowed one homer at home all season. The Blue Jays have been a bit sluggish in the first five innings of all three games this series, but I think their bats break out early tonight against Cortes, who has been struggling. With that being said, I am rolling with Blue Jays F5 ML at -130 for 1.5u as my most confident MLB Play of the Day.
