Philadelphia Phillies vs. Atlanta Braves Best Bet: Can the Bats Get to Zack Wheeler, Max Fried in NLDS Game 2?

Unlike most of the world, I was not surprised to see the Atlanta Braves drop Game 1 of the NLDS against their divisional rival. This Philadelphia Phillies team has the same mojo as last year’s NL Champs. Philly beat the Braves on the road in a 3-0 low-scoring affair. I’m willing to bet game two is much more exciting…

Philadelphia Phillies vs. Atlanta Braves Prediction

On paper, tonight’s matchup looks like it should be a “pitchers’ duel.” Max Fried and Zack Wheeler are two of the best pitchers in the NL West. If this game was going to be a low-scoring pitchers’ duel, then why did the total open up at o/u 8 after the first game ended 3-0?

If you dig into the numbers, you’ll be surprised to hear that although Max Fried owns a 2.55 ERA this year, the Phillies see him very well. J.T. Realmuto and Trea Turner have 24 hits combined in only 68 at bats against the lefty, and Bryce Harper is hitting over .275 against Fried as well. Nick Castellanos is batting .500 against Fried in a small sample, but this offense’s success is directly correlated to Castellanos’ performance. When he’s hot, this Philly offense shines.

The Braves’ bullpen is overrated, so when Fried exits this game much earlier than the public is expecting, they aren’t going to have the arms to slow down this lively Phillies’ offense. Luckily for Atlanta, the Phillies’ offense won’t be the only one shining on Monday night.

There is zero chance that the best offense in baseball drops another “goose-egg” tonight. They were held off the scoreboard for the entirely of game one. As soon as that first ATL baserunner crosses home-plate, the floodgates will open for the Braves. This lineup has seen Zach Wheeler a ton, expect them to capitalize against a pitcher they have plenty of experience against.

If this total opener up at 7, I wouldn’t be betting this over. As crazy as that sounds, I think it’s extremely telling that a total between two ace pitchers has opened and stayed at o/u 8 after game one ended 3-0. Let’s not forget that Max Fried owns a 4.43 ERA in the postseason. Bet the over tonight in this heavyweight battle between two of the most exciting teams in baseball.
