Los Angeles Angels vs. Miami Marlins Prediction: Can Jesus Luzardo Lead Marlins To Their First Win?

The Miami Marlins and Los Angeles Angels square off in Game 2 of their series from LoanDepot Park in Miami tonight. The Angels took the first game of the series 7–4, moving the Marlins to 0–5 on the season. While the Marlins still have yet to win a game this season, they are -145 favorites tonight. What should we expect in this game?

Los Angeles Angels vs. Miami Marlins Prediction

The Marlins may have started the season 0–5, but I like them to win this game tonight. For starters, the Marlins have a huge pitching advantage in this matchup. Jesus Luzardo starts for the Marlins tonight and is coming off one of his best seasons in the MLB so far. He’s found his way in this Marlins starting rotation and was the opening day starter for the Marlins this season.

As the Marlins have gone around their order, he is starting for the second time this season. In his first outing, he pitched five innings against the Pirates, giving up just two earned runs and striking out eight. It was still not enough, as the bullpen let him down and the Marlins lost 5–6. On the other side, the Angels are starting Tyler Anderson. Anderson is at the bottom of the Angels rotation and is the last starter to pitch this season before the rotation flips next game. Tyler Anderson has been floating from team team every year since 2019, not being able to really find a good spot in any rotation. While he did have a decent season with the Dodgers in 2022, he regressed in 2023, going 6–6 with a 5.43 ERA. Anderson really struggled on the Angels last season and I expect that to carry over into this season. Last season, the Marlins were one of the best teams in baseball against left-handed pitching. The Marlins ranked second with a .279 batting average against left-handed pitching, which was second best in the MLB behind the Braves. With Tyler Anderson being a lefty, I like the Marlins to exploit this matchup and put up a decent amount of runs off the starter. Along with the Marlins money line, I also like Luzardo to go over 6.5 strikeouts. Luzardo has really found his strikeout groove the last few seasons, and he passed this easily in his first start of the season already with eight. Luzardo has also seen the Angels twice in the past two seasons and had seven in one meeting and 12 in the other.

The Angels ranked 13 highest in strikeout percentage against Lefties last year, and their lineup has only gotten worse this year. This means we will be on both the Marlins moneyline and Jesus Luzardo to go over 6.5 strikeouts today.
