San Diego Padres vs. Los Angeles Angels Prop Pick: Will Dylan Cease Rack Up the Strikeouts Tonight?

The Los Angeles Angels and San Diego Padres square off for game two of their series from Angels Stadium tonight in Anaheim, California. The Angels currently sit in last place in the AL West with a record of 23–38 and our 11.5 games behind the Mariners.

The Angels have the worst record in the American League and have really been feeling the loss of Shohei Ohtani in the off-season and Mike Trout to the IL this season. the Padres, meanwhile, are in second place in the NL West behind the Dodgers with a record of 32–32. They have lost three games in a row, but are sitting in a decent spot for the wildcard, although it is still very early in the season. What should we expect in game two of the series tonight?

SAN DIEGO PADRES VS. LOS ANGELES ANGELS PREDICTION

The player I’m looking at tonight is San Diego Padres pitcher Dylan Cease. Dylan Cease is off to another good start this year and his first season with the Padres, sporting a 3.42 ERA and striking out 87 batters already this season in 71 innings. Cease has long been regarded as one of the best strikeout pitchers in baseball, and that has continued into this season.

Cease has wasted no time getting off to a hot start this season, as his 11.03 K/9 is sixth among all starting pitchers in baseball this season. It is also third-best in the National League. Where he has gotten into a little bit of trouble is with walks, as he is sporting a 2.66 BB/9 this season. However, that should not be as big of an issue against the Angels. The Angels have one of the lowest walk rates against right-handed pitch this season, as they are walking in 7.6% of plate appearances against right-handed pitchers, which is the 25th lowest in the MLB. The Angels have also had a lot of swings and misses against right-handed pitching, as they have struck out in 23.6% of plate appearances in 2024 against righties, which is the 11th highest in the MLB.

Dylan Cease has been on a roll with strikeouts this season but has gone under 6.5 strikeouts in two of his last three meetings. However, the two misses were against the Royals and Braves, who have both had low strikeout numbers. Ceases last three starts of been against teams with low strikeout rates, but he has hit over 6.5 strikeouts in eight of 12 total outings this season and in eight of his last 11 appearances overall. He usually gets to at least seven but has even hit 12 this season in a start against the Cubs.

Cease has landed on seven strikeouts exactly three times this year, which is why I like this number at 6.5 even though there is some juice on the over. Eat the juice and back Cease to get at least seven for the ninth time in his 13th outing this season.
