Arizona Diamondbacks vs. San Diego Padres Prediction

Fernando Tatis Jr. and the San Diego Padres have lost four games in a row, which included a sweep in Anaheim against the Angels earlier this week. Their last loss dropped them to one game below .500, as they now sit in second place in the NL West with a record of 32–33.

The Diamondbacks, meanwhile, have won four of their last five games and are slowly building back up to .500, as they are 29–33, Good for fourth place in the NL West. What should we expect between these two divisional foes tonight?

The Diamondbacks will be sending out Slade Cecconi tonight to the mound first. Cecconi has really struggled in the MLB since he debuted last year. He is sporting a 5.06 career ERA in 14 appearances, including a 5.59 ERA in 2024 with seven total outings. Cecconi pitched against the Padres once already this season, giving up six earned runs and 4.1 innings back on May 3. That made up one of his four losses this season, as he is sporting a 1-4 pitcher record. The Padres banged him up last month, and they’re in a position to do so again, as they have been one of the hottest teams in baseball against right-handed pitching.

The Padres have been scorching against righties, hitting .264 against right-handed pitchers over the last two weeks with just a 15.6% strikeout rate, which is the lowest in baseball over that span. They are also hitting .333 with just a 9.9% strikeout rate over the last seven days in their last 131 plate appearances against right-handed pitching. Given that they have already hit Cecconi pretty hard once this season, they’re in a position to do so once again as a hot ball club. The Padres will counter by sending out righty Randy Vazquez. Vasquez is 1-3 on the season with a 5.74 ERA. While his ERA looks high, a lot of that damage can be attributed to outings against the Rockies, and which she gave up nine earned runs in 6.1 combined innings. Outside of those two starts, he’s actually been pretty good this season. This will be his third start of the season in Petco Park, a place he should feel much more comfortable pitching in front of his home crowd. The Diamondbacks also do not have much familiarity with Randy Vazquez, which will give him the upper hand over his counterpart Slade Cecconi tonight.

The Padres have lost four games in a row, but are in a very good position to win tonight against a pitcher they just crushed a month ago. The Padre's offense has really been heating up as of late, and Randy Vazquez should be able to dial in tonight at home. Back the Padres to end their four-game skid and get back on track and game one against the Diamondbacks tonight.
