ANALYSIS

Miami Marlins vs. New York Mets Prediction: Can David Peterson, Mets Bounce Back Tonight?

The New York Mets and Miami Marlins meet for game two of their three-game series from Citi Field in Queens tonight. The Marlins took game one of the series as the Mets looked a bit sluggish after returning from London after their series against the Phillies across the pond. The Mets only put up two runs in a 4–2 loss, which dropped them to 28–37 on the season. The Mets and Marlins make up fourth and fifth place respectively in the NL East, as the Marlins are 23–43 entering tonight’s game. What should we expect in game two tonight?

Miami Marlins vs. New York Mets Prediction

The Mets have been disappointing in 2024 so far and have come in under their expectations, but one player who has stepped up for them has been David Peterson. The left-handed starting pitcher has the lowest ERA in the Mets rotation with a 3.09 ERA through his first two starts this season. Although the Mets did not win his start against the Dodgers, they were able to give him enough run support against the nationals in his last start to get him the win.

Peterson struggled last year with a 5.03 ERA after a strong 2022 season with a 3.83 ERA. His hot start to 2024 is exactly what both he and the Mets need if they want to climb back to .500 and have any chance at the playoffs this year.

Braxton Garrett will take the mound for the Marlins first tonight. Garrett has struggled immensely this season, posting a 5.81 ERA in 26.1 innings pitched across his five starts this year. His most recent outing was his worst, giving up five earned runs in 2.2 innings against the Rays. Garrett has been wildly inconsistent, as he pitched a complete game shut out against the Diamondbacks back in May, but has given up five or more earned runs in three of his five starts this year.

The Mets should have an advantage tonight against Garrett as they have been the much better team between the two against left-handed pitching. The Mets are hitting .255 against left-handed pitching this season and just .234 against right-handed pitching. The Marlins have been one of the worst teams in the majors against left-handed pitching this season, batting .220 against lefties and .239 against righties. The Mets have also had a better bullpen. With the pitching advantage and a bounce-back Angle, I like the Mets to win game two tonight behind David Peterson.
