To the public, the Braves series win against the Phillies probably looks more impressive than the Diamondbacks series win against the Padres, but I beg to differ. The Phillies are banged up and coasting to the All Star Break, and the Padres were one of the hottest teams in baseball before losing two games to the snakes. I really like the way Arizona is trending right now…
After beating the Phillies, the easy angle in this game is to back the Braves after that big series win. They have their best pitcher on the mound in Chris Sale, who just got selected to the All Star Game. As a contrarian, I want to fade Sale after his All Star selection. The Diamondbacks crush left-handed pitching, and have won four of their last five games. They are playing at home and have one of the best pitching prospects in baseball making his debut. Let’s back him against the Braves who everyone thinks is “back” after winning one series against the injured Phillies.
Yilber Diaz is coming off six no-hit innings in his last minor league start. He’s a strikeout-heavy arm who can take advantage of the Braves strikeout woes. I’m willing to bet, if he fills up the zone, Diaz has a really solid MLB debut on Monday. He’s got great stuff, it’s only a matter of his command. Until I see the Braves offense show some consistency, I am going to continue to fade them… especially after a big series win. The public is going to think the Braves are returning to last year’s form and back their ace on the mound, but that’s the squarest play on the slate…
As the Diamondbacks continue to heat up, back them tonight on the run line against Atlanta. In what I expect to be a low scoring game, I want the +1.5 just in case we see the Diamondbacks blow another save or give up another late lead.
