Toronto Blue Jays vs. Tampa Bay Rays Prediction
The Rays and Blue Jays represent the bottom two teams in the AL East, as the Rays are slightly ahead in fourth place with a record of 51–50, while the Blue Jays are in last place with a record of 45–55.
The Rays have been playing better baseball as of late, as they have gone 18–12 over their last 30 games to battle back above .500. Meanwhile, the Blue Jays have been reeling from some tough losses over the last month, as they have gone 11–19 over there last 30 games to fall further back under .500.
Starting tonight on the mound for the Rays will be right-handed pitcher Taj Bradley. Bradley has been impressive so far this season, sporting a 2.63 ERA with a 1.05 WHIP. He has posted three straight quality starts in July with an overall 0.45 ERA this month.
On the other side, the Blue Jays will send Chris Bassitt out first. The right-handed pitcher has a 3.71 ERA this season with a 1.42 whip. Bassitt ended June with a 3.2 ERA but has struggled in July, sporting a 6.48 ERA over his three starts this month. However, Chris Bassitt has been a much better pitcher in daytime starts this season, as he has a 2.89 ERA in eight starts during day games and a 4.22 ERA in his 12 starts at night.
Much like Bassitt, the Blue Jays have also played better as a team in day games. The Blue Jays are 26–23 in their day games this season and 20–32 and their night games. Over the last month, the Blue Jays are hitting .275 in day games, which is third in baseball behind the Yankees and Twins. On the other side, the Rays have literally been the worst team in baseball over this span, hitting .198 in day games, which is below even the White Sox and Mariners.
We are getting a pretty good price on the Blue Jays here in the series closer because the Rays have the lower ERA starter on the mound and have been playing better baseball over the last month. However, with Chris Bassitt starting at home in a day game and the Blue Jay's recent success in day games, I like them to come out and finish this series strong. This is the last game of a road trip for the Rays, who will be going home tonight to start a series at home against the Reds, and there may be a slow start for them at the plate today.
