One of the MLB's biggest underdog stories from last season, the Detroit Tigers, will try to pull off an upset on the road against the Los Angeles Dodgers during MLB Opening Day on Thursday night. The Dodgers already have two regular season games under their belt during the Tokyo Series, beating the Chicago Cubs in both matchups overseas in Japan.
This is going to be a pitcher's duel between Tarik Skubal and Blake Snell. Snell was acquired from San Francisco this offseason, while Skubal won his first career Cy Young award in 2024. Both pitchers are left-handed and capable of collecting strikeouts with ease, which is why oddsmakers have set the total runs at 6.5 between the Tigers and Dodgers.

He's going to present challenges for the Dodgers hitters. Despite rostering the most potent batting lineup in the MLB, featuring Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, and Teoscar Hernandez, Skubal is going to make them earn their win at home tonight.
Skubal gave up two or fewer earned runs in each of his final five starts last year. He gave up two runs through six innings in a 4-3 loss at home to the Dodgers on July 12, 2024. I expect a similar outcome tonight.
Obviously, Detroit's relief pitching will need to step up and avoid a meltdown in the final three innings, but I like how the Tigers looked in the AL playoffs. They beat Houston and lost 3-2 against Cleveland in the ALDS. The batting lineup is healthy and retained studs like Riley Greene, Kerry Carpenter, and Spencer Torkelson. The addition of Gleyber Torres from the Yankees is another move I like quite a bit.
