Cubs vs. Cardinals Prediction
Ben Brown has quietly emerged as one of the most important arms in the Cubs rotation. With injuries and inconsistency forcing Chicago to search for answers, Brown has stepped up in a major way. He enters this game with a sparkling 2.01 ERA, and the underlying metrics suggest it’s no fluke. His 2.85 xERA and 2.26 FIP both support the breakout.
What stands out most is his ability to limit damage. Brown has allowed just one home run in 44.2 innings this season, while generating nearly 80% of his outs via strikeouts or ground balls. That combination is incredibly difficult to sustain offense against, especially for a Cardinals lineup that lacks consistent power.
On the other side, St. Louis hands the ball to Kyle Leahy, and this is where I think the game swings heavily toward Chicago. Leahy’s 4.44 ERA looks respectable on the surface, but the underlying numbers are alarming. He owns a 6.30 ERA and 4.94 FIP while allowing a .300 expected batting average against. Opponents are consistently squaring him up, as evidenced by his 50% hard-hit rate and average exit velocity north of 92 mph. Those are the types of numbers that eventually catch up to a pitcher.
The Cubs offense has certainly cooled off over the past few weeks, but I’m willing to buy the dip here. During their recent losing streak, several key bats underperformed simultaneously. Nico Hoerner, Alex Bregman, and Seiya Suzuki have all been below their normal standards, yet Suzuki may be showing signs of breaking out after recording three hits in Friday’s game.
Meanwhile, Michael Busch and Ian Happ have continued carrying the offense. Busch has been one of the hottest hitters on the roster this month, while Happ continues to provide power in the middle of the lineup. I also believe Chicago’s offensive ceiling is significantly higher than St. Louis’.
The Cardinals have exceeded expectations this season, but this still looks like a rebuilding lineup. Jordan Walker is finally showing why he was such a highly touted prospect, Alec Burleson continues to be a solid contact hitter, and Ivan Herrera has delivered some big moments. Beyond that, there simply isn’t much firepower compared to what the Cubs can roll out when their lineup gets going.

With the much better starting pitcher, the higher offensive ceiling, and a struggling opposing starter who is allowing plenty of hard contact, this feels like a spot where Chicago can create separation.
