Cleveland Cavaliers vs Detroit Pistons Picks and Prediction: Mitchell Out as Shorthanded Cavs Walk Into Detroit's Buzzsaw

The Cleveland Cavaliers, fourth in the Eastern Conference at 37-23, travel to face the Detroit Pistons at Little Caesars Arena on Friday, February 27, tipping off at 7:00 PM ET. With Donovan Mitchell ruled out with a groin strain and James Harden, Dennis Schröder, Keon Ellis, and Dean Wade all listed as questionable heading into tip-off, Cleveland arrives in Detroit running one of the most depleted backcourts of the season against the East's top seed, who enters fully healthy outside of a suspended Isaiah Stewart and riding an 8-2 stretch that has Cade Cunningham drawing MVP chatter, as both franchises sit atop the Central Division but separated by 6.5 games in the standings, with Detroit's 22-7 home record and Jalen Duren's three straight double-doubles powering a Pistons squad that opened as 7.5-point favorites before sharp money moved the line back to 6.5 in a game where the spread tells a more complicated story than the injury report suggests.

Cleveland Cavaliers vs Detroit Pistons Picks and Prediction: Mitchell Out as Shorthanded Cavs Walk Into Detroit's Buzzsaw

Cavaliers vs Pistons Recent Performance

Detroit is the best team in the Eastern Conference, and they have been all season. The Pistons knocked off Oklahoma City 124-116 on Wednesday to go 8-2 in their last ten, and this team has been doing this all year at Little Caesars Arena where they're 22-7 with an average margin of victory north of ten points. Cade Cunningham is playing the best basketball of his career, averaging 25.4 points and 9.8 assists while the MVP conversation around him gets louder by the week. Jalen Duren has been an absolute problem in the paint over the last three games, posting 26.7 points and 14 rebounds per night, and at this point the Pistons are the only realistic threat to Oklahoma City's throne at the top of the league.

Cleveland is somehow still functioning at a high level without its best player. The Cavaliers dropped 118-116 at Milwaukee Wednesday, and that's about as respectable a result as you can expect from a team missing Donovan Mitchell, with James Harden nursing a fractured right thumb, and with Schröder and Ellis both dealing with their own issues. Jarrett Allen went for 27 and 11 against the Bucks anyway, and Jaylon Tyson is averaging 13.5 points and 5.4 rebounds as a legitimate secondary option. Cleveland is 8-2 in their last ten despite all of it, because Nate Bjorkgren has built something that doesn't collapse the moment the injury report gets ugly.

Cavaliers vs Pistons Head to Head

Detroit leads the season series 2-1 and has covered in three of the last four meetings against Cleveland. The Pistons dropped the opener of this series then won the next two, and that pattern tracks with a team that got its identity locked in around midseason and hasn't looked back. Cleveland's historical edge here is real, 13 wins in the last 15 all-time meetings, but the Cavaliers who won those games had a healthy Mitchell running the offense.

The key number going into tonight: this line opened at Pistons -7.5 and has already moved to -6.5 despite Mitchell being confirmed out. Sharp money found Cleveland at the opener and kept pushing, which tells you the market doesn't see this as a blowout situation even with the Cavs running a skeleton crew. Detroit is 11-9-1 ATS in 21 games where they've been favored by 7.5 or more, barely break-even at big numbers, and the Cavaliers are 6-4 ATS in their last ten. Both of those trends are pointing at the same conclusion.

Cavaliers vs Pistons Team News

Detroit enters this one about as healthy as any team can in late February. Isaiah Stewart is serving a suspension, but Cunningham, Duren, Tobias Harris, Ausar Thompson, and Duncan Robinson are all available and running the full rotation. Harris has grabbed six or more rebounds in seven of his last eight games, and with Cleveland potentially sending out a depleted backcourt, there are going to be boards available all night. This is the Pistons at full strength in their home building on a Friday, and Cade is circling this one with East dominance on the line.

Cleveland's injury report is a different situation entirely. Mitchell is out with the groin strain that cost him Wednesday's game in Milwaukee, and at 28.5 points per game he is irreplaceable in any traditional sense. Harden is a game-time decision with a fractured right thumb, and Schröder, Ellis, and Wade are all in the questionable column heading into tip-off, which means the Cavaliers could realistically dress a backcourt that has no business sharing a floor with Cunningham. Max Strus remains out with a foot injury and is nowhere near a return. Allen and Mobley hold the frontcourt together and can keep this competitive in the paint, but whoever Cleveland suits up at guard tonight is going to get tested hard.

Prediction: Pistons 118, Cavaliers 112

Detroit wins this game, and it probably isn't close for stretches. Cunningham gets his 27 or 28 against a backcourt that has no answer for him, Duren continues his run in the paint with another double-double, and the Pistons control the pace from the opening tip. Cleveland stays competitive through three quarters because Allen and Mobley are legitimate players who can win the frontcourt battle, and whoever Bjorkgren puts in the backcourt is going to compete, because that's what this team does. The Pistons pull away in the fourth when their depth advantage takes over and Cleveland runs out of options, but the final margin lands somewhere around six points, nowhere near what the opener implied when this line was sitting at 7.5.

The spread opened at Pistons -7.5 and is sitting at -6.5 right now, a full point of movement toward Cleveland after Mitchell's status was confirmed. That reverse line movement is the most important data point in this game, because sharp money saw 7.5 and decided Detroit was being overvalued even against a shorthanded road team. Multiple models are projecting a Detroit margin in the 3.8 to 4.0 range, which puts this spread at roughly 2.5 points of cushion for Cleveland backers. Cleveland's offensive rating is still 117.6 per 100 possessions without Mitchell, because Allen, Mobley, and Tyson run the system rather than freelancing, and a functional offense against Detroit's 108.5 defensive rating creates real problems for anyone asking you to lay six-plus. Detroit is 15-15 ATS at home this season, dead flat in their own building, and 11-9-1 when favored by 7.5 or more. Projecting 118-112 puts the margin at six, a point and a half inside the spread, and if Harden is available tonight that number only gets more favorable. Get on the Cavaliers (+6.5) before tip.
