Indiana Pacers vs Los Angeles Lakers Picks and Predictions: Luka Inherits a Broken Rotation on the Second Night of a B2B

The Indiana Pacers (15-47), riding a seven-game losing streak and chasing lottery odds more than wins, travel to Crypto.com Arena to face a Los Angeles Lakers (37-25) squad on the back end of a back-to-back after dropping a 120-113 road decision in Denver, with LeBron James (left elbow contusion, left foot arthritis), Deandre Ayton (left knee soreness), and Maxi Kleber (lumbar back strain) all officially ruled out for Friday's 10:30 PM ET tip, leaving Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves to carry the entire offensive identity against a Pacers team that got Pascal Siakam back Wednesday for 29 points and five boards in 30 minutes, with Siakam listed as probable tonight and the total sitting at 234.5 in a game where a single injury report knocked out two starters and the Lakers' most reliable interior presence all at once.

Lakers vs Pacers Recent Performance

Los Angeles is 37-25 and sixth in the West, but tonight's version of that roster does not look like a sixth seed. The three-game win streak that ended Thursday in Denver was built with a full lineup. Now Jaxson Hayes starts at center after Ayton went out 4:30 into the Nuggets game, and Hayes shined with a season-high 19 points in 27 minutes. One impressive outing does not change the math on losing LeBron's 21.4 PPG and Ayton's 12.6 PPG and 8.2 RPG from a single injury report. Luka (32.3 PPG, 7.8 rebounds, 8.6 assists, first in the NBA in scoring) and Reaves (23.6 PPG) are still a formidable 1-2, but the frontcourt goes from functional to paper-thin, and a B2B following a road loss at altitude is not the spot to test it.

The trend that stands out is the totals number. Lakers go Under in 63% of second games in back-to-backs this season (13-22 O/U), and the total has dipped Under in five of their last seven games and five of their last six at home. Eight of their last nine home games following a road loss have finished Under. Missing LeBron and Ayton strips meaningful scoring from the equation, even accounting for the usage bump Luka and Reaves absorb.

Indiana is 15-47 and on a seven-game skid, which makes them sound disposable at Crypto.com. They are not without options. Siakam coming back from the wrist sprain that cost him three games brings 24.0 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 3.9 assists into a lineup that was running on Jarace Walker (11.1 PPG) and T.J. McConnell (9.4 PPG) without him. His second game back after that kind of absence carries no rust discount, and he proved it Wednesday with 29 on 30 minutes against the Clippers. Andrew Nembhard (17.2 PPG, 7.3 APG) and Aaron Nesmith are both probable after logging minutes that night. The Pacers give up 119.7 points per game, sixth-worst allowed in the league, so they are not stopping anyone tonight either.

Indiana Pacers vs Los Angeles Lakers Head to Head

Friday is the first meeting between these teams this season. The Lakers took both games last year and have won seven of the last ten, including the 2023 In-Season Tournament Finals. At Crypto.com against Indiana, LA is 9-2 ATS over the last eleven meetings, though that record belongs to a roster that had LeBron and Ayton on the floor.

Indiana is 0-7 ATS over the current losing streak. The Pacers have covered the spread in each of their last five games against the Lakers following a loss. The Lakers have failed to cover the spread in each of their last five home games against Central Division opponents with losing records.

Lakers vs Pacers Team News

Luka is the whole show tonight. At 32.3 points per game with the keys handed fully to him, his usage climbs and his minutes stay high until this one is put away. He went for 27 in Denver on Thursday and, post-All-Star return from a hamstring strain, is averaging 29.3 points over his last eight games. Worth flagging: he sits one technical foul away from a one-game suspension, so expect a composed performance from him late, and expect JJ Redick to be careful with his star's minutes once the margin is comfortable. Reaves steps into a true co-lead role tonight, taking on more ball-handling responsibility with LeBron's playmaking gone. Hayes earned the start Thursday and will get it again, but he is a reserve big who rarely approaches double digits in a normal night, not a replacement for 8.2 boards and interior presence.

Indiana is close to its healthiest version in weeks. Siakam carries the probable tag from the wrist sprain, but he came out and dropped 29 against the Clippers two days ago, so the designation is precautionary. Nembhard and Nesmith both played Wednesday and are probable tonight. Ivica Zubac, acquired before the deadline, has yet to debut for Indiana with a left ankle sprain. Haliburton (torn Achilles) and Furphy (torn ACL) are done for the year.

Prediction: Lakers 118, Pacers 113

Luka takes over. He pushes through 34 points, Reaves gets his 22-23, and the Lakers' home court and overall roster depth edge Indiana in the third quarter when it matters. The problem for Lakers backers is the margin. Without LeBron directing possessions and Ayton anchoring the paint, the scoring ceiling compresses and the defensive rebounding gets messy. Siakam finds favorable matchups against Hayes all night and keeps Indiana competitive through three quarters. The final margin lands closer to five than twelve, which is the entire case for the Pacers here.

Best Bet: Pascal Siakam Over 22.5 Points (+100) Click here to get the best odds at FanDuel Sportsbook

This is the cleanest signal on the board, and it comes with plus money. Siakam averages 24.0 points per game, a number that already clears this line on an average night, and the context tonight is stacked in his favor. The Lakers are missing Ayton, their primary interior defender who averaged 8.2 rebounds and 0.9 blocks, plus Kleber, leaving Hayes as the lone frontcourt piece. Siakam exploits that all night. He drove for 29 in 30 minutes against the Clippers Wednesday, proving the wrist tag is precautionary, and gets 30-plus minutes against a team where the only rim protection is a backup center on his best night.

On top of that, blowout risk applies to Luka and Reaves, not Siakam. If the Lakers run away with this, Siakam stays on the floor as Indiana's franchise player while the Lakers' stars come off. The +102 odds need this to hit just over 50% of the time to profit. On a player whose average already beats the line, in the best interior matchup he has had in weeks, that threshold is very reachable.
