I know the NFL playoffs are on, but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy some action on the hardwood. Besides, there are WAY too many great college basketball matchups to just ignore these games all together. Here are some of my favorite plays for this Sunday…

Michigan State vs. Maryland Prediction
You’re telling me the Terps are +1.5 against the surging Spartans? Maryland has disappointed for the majority of the season, but they have covered their last three games. This is a great sell-high spot on the Spartans, who are coming off two consecutive wins. College Park is a tough place to play, don’t be surprised if the Terps win this one outright behind great guard-play from Jahmir Young, the Maryland-grown kid averaging over TWENTY points per game.

Memphis vs. Tulane Prediction
Memphis is coming off a bad loss to USF at home, but that doesn’t mean we buy stock in the Tigers just yet. Tulane has an extremely high-powered offense that likes to run, and they’re coming off a dud of a performance as well. I’m willing to bet this Tulane offense bounces back after only dropping 69 points in their last game. This Memphis defense is nothing special, we’ve seen teams put up over 100 points and hanging with them all season. Tulane matches up perfectly with Memphis, don’t be surprised if they catch David Jones and the Tigers sleeping on the road and hand them their second consecutive loss in a row.

Rutgers vs. Illinois Prediction
With the skeptical return of Terrence Shannon Jr. back into the rotation for Illinois, there will be a lot of eyes on this BIG10 matchup this afternoon. I’m worried about the Fighting Illini’s chemistry on the court after missing their star due to a pending investigation for about a month. He averages over 20 PPG this season, but I’m willing to bet their offense will struggle early with his return to the floor.
Rutgers doesn’t win with their offense, they win with their physicality and defense. That’s exactly how they are going to keep this game close today. I’m not saying they win, or even cover this game, but with the controversial return of Shannon Jr., I’m not sure Illinois’ offense will be performing up to their potential on Sunday. Fade both of these offenses in what should be an ugly, low-scoring affair.
