Bill Self’s Jayhawks are off to a great start this season, but they haven’t quite passed the “eye test” for me in terms of being one of the elite teams in the country. Iowa State has honestly looked like the more dominant team in the Big 12 up to this point, hence why they are laying 3.5 points on the spread.
The Iowa State Cyclones have impressed me this year. This team doesn’t just win with defense anymore; they have one of the most-improved offenses in the Big 12. Fresh off back-to-back wins against TCU and Kansas State, the Cyclones’ confidence is at an all-time high.
This Cyclones team is led by the underrated backcourt of Tamin Lipsey and Keshon Gilbert. Kansas will have a tough time keeping up with these two guards. I’ve also noticed that this Kansas team struggles to score when Dickinson and McCullar Jr. are neutralized. It’s easier said than done, but this Cyclones defense has the size, speed and defensive tenacity to eliminate at least one of these two elite scorers. If they can do that, nobody else on this Kansas team can find an open shot on their own.
I might be the only bettor on the planet who wasn’t surprised to see Iowa State as the betting favorite in this spot. Put their rankings to the side; Iowa State has been playing like they’re the better team in 2024. Considering less than 30% of the bets are currently backing the Cyclones on the spread at the time of writing this article, there has already been some reverse line movement; a great sign for Iowa State backers.
As the spread continues to move towards the Cyclones, lock in your bets on Iowa State before we see this line get any larger. They’ve had one of the best home-court advantages in the country over the years, and this season has been no different. Iowa State is 12-0 at the Hilton Coliseum this season.
