ANALYSIS

Oregon vs. Arizona Prediction: Can Oregon Outlast Caleb Love, Wildcats in Round of 32?

Familiar Pac-12 foes No. 4 seed Arizona and No. 5 seed Oregon face off in a Round of 32 matchup tonight in Seattle. Both teams were on cruise control in their Round 1 openers.

Akron was no match for Arizona on Friday, as the Wildcats handled business, winning 93-65. Jaden Bradley led the way for Arizona with 19 points, joined by four other teammates in double figures.

In similar blowout fashion, Oregon defeated Liberty, 81-52. Jackson Shelstad led the way with 19 points, and the Ducks held the Flames to just 20 first-half points.

Oregon vs. Arizona Prediction

These are two similar teams in that they are athletic, deep, boast a top-25 defense, and look super dangerous when the threes are falling. Each team has a few key players back from last season, where Arizona went 2-1 in a couple of high-scoring affairs and one gritty one. All-time, Tommy Lloyd is 4-2 against Dana Altman.

An interesting takeaway from those battles last year was the performance of Caleb Love. The idea that Arizona goes as Caleb Love goes was true in the series last year. Love scored 36 and 22 points in the Cats’ two wins over Oregon, while putting up a six-point stinker and getting benched when they lost in the conference tournament.

Love is bigger and stronger than Oregon’s smaller backcourt of Shelstad and Keshawn Barthelemy, which could lead to success for him in getting downhill tonight. But I always have a bit of a hard time trusting a guy who shot hunts as much as he does, and is such a streaky shooter.

Another matchup I’m eyeing is Nate Bittle in the post for Oregon. He’s much stronger than Henri Veesaar, and will be able to shoot right over the top of Tobe Awaka.

Keeping Arizona out of transition will be key for Oregon. When they are running, getting easy baskets, and knocking down open looks from deep on the fast break, they look like one of the best teams in the country.

This line opened at 5.5 and is now down to 3.5. The familiarity between these coaches and some of the players, plus the similarity in style and talent level, makes me feel like this one will go down to the wire.

Factoring in both Lloyd and Altman’s NCAA Tournament track records, and the sporadic nature of Caleb Love, I’ll give a slight lean to Oregon. But it’s a no-play for me.
